SELLING SCAM ON 181'S

Post by SEMPER FI FOREVER »

I am asking if anyone is aware of some type of scam/fraud going on regarding sales of the "THINGS"? Since putting my car in the Type 181 registery and Samba classifieds, I have received three different full price offers from international buyers, all claiming to have U.S. contacts who will send a cahiers check with additional funds to pay their shipper. I am supposed to be receiving a check this week from a man in Portugal who is adamant that I don't sell to anyone else. After receiving another similar offer this morning I am getting very skeptical about the whole situation. Anyone heard of any similar situations?
Thanks, Cliff :?

Great information Scott, I will probably report the three to the secret service as indicated in one of the links. I should probably also notify Samba and The 181 Registry

While you are at it, don't tell the scammers you're on to them. Keep the deal going. Waste as much of their time as possible. Then you can frame the bogus check.

A guy on Yahoo named Blumpkin has been playing these guys for a while getting them to send him Checks by FEDEX and then scamming them by saying he cashed the check and gambled away all the money.

:) Contacted the Secret Service field office, they are overloaded with fraudulent cashiers checks, complaints from victims and near victims.
They are unable to do anything as they had to close their Nigerian office due to civil unrest. Best thing is to spread the word.
If anyone has an "ex" they would like to spoil, I will send them the 10K check.

I`ve had a Hadley Veep for sale for some time now. I have had so many contacts from these guys I don`t even look at them anymore. It`s annoying that they have been doing this to this extent for this long while life goes on in a ligitimate way for us in the VW world that are buying and selling. They need their fingers chopped off at the elbow. Best luck. Bob Ingman

This one cracks me up... you can tell that the buyers aren't aircooled people... if they were, they'd be offering to trade, asking if you could remove a few parts... if you'd swap parts... if it's possible to buy it without an engine...

It's great how tight the Aircooled community is (wasn't this way with hot rods)...

Last week I left a camera at Vintage Auto Werks.... in my subsequent 6 stops everyone knew where it was and wanted to ensure that I got it back.

They tried to grab a Van from me this way. He said he wanted it for parts and was going to ship it to England. Blew him off by saying I wouldn't ship it.

When I didn't go for it he asked me were it was so he could go take a look at it. When I tried to get his name and phone number, he said he was using a radio phone of some type. and that he could make calls but could not receive them. Roving bandent ring I'll bet. Watch out folks who you tell were your presous is setting.
