I would be surprised if I am wrong on this...but it would not be the first time. Yes....it is a beautiful 71. But (1) they never made it in brown metallic as far as I know (could be wrong). (2) there is blue metallic paint inside the engine compartment and inside of the trunk. Look at the clasps on the jack and at the carpet gaps. They show blue metallic. It was either a very very complete/good repaint, a custom color, or a dealer respray. Nice though. It will need a lot of work to stay a daily driver. They all do. The strut bearings on the early models were the worst. Ray

Doh! Thats what I get for looking and not reading. Yes it was repainted. That was no triviality. The engine and all of the trunk liner would have to have come out....and the interior too. It probably got wrecked or wet. Sill...looks great. Someone is digging for $ though. There is nothing rare about the bilstein jack. They are all over the junkyards. Great to look at....sucky jack for real use though. The becker stereo is oK. I would be moe impressed (old radio wise) by a blaupunkt wolfsburg III with am/shortwave 8) . Ray

Yeah, I think the ad says it was repainted at the dealer? Anyway, daily driving a 411 or 412 would require a ton of work I would think! Heck, my '85 Golf needs constant work to stay a daily driver. I just almost finished rebuilding the front end this weekend, and a friend helped fix the damaged wire on the hall sender plug to cure that pesky no spark problem. Oh yeah, I opened it up yesterday after I got back from my trip to find about 3 inches of water on the RR floor. D'oh! It fires up, just won't stay running now-problem with the damn fuel system again I think...
Anyway, I placed a token bid on the 411, but I don't know if I could stomach a 24 hr. drive back with this on the trailer.

Yeah Daily driving a 412 takes it's toll, I drove mine for 2 months and wound up working on it every other weekend. The Bilstein jacks are great if you get one of the TALL Bus kind that you use a 19 mm socket on to crank up or down. I use one all the time, when jacking up my buses and 412 (used it on a Beetle once and ripped the floor pan out) The one he shows in the add is the crappy short one that will cause a car to FALL ON YOU!!

Also, there is nothing rare about the automatic (noted by the seller). The later 411/412 came with a bilstein bus style jack under the back seat. But...it did not have the 19mm socket style crank. It had a crank handle on it. Nice jack. high lift. Ray

Yeah, I read that "rare automatic" and was like:  . Anyway, yeah, I see various types of old Bilstein jacks on ebay for cheap all the time...Edit- on a side note, my Golf is up and running again, woohoo!
