I didn't know there are 411/412's in Africa (except for South Africa, where they were also built, I believe). Interesting. Look at eBay, gearboxes are being offered once in a while, mainly in Germany. Shipping will be very expensive, though.
In this forum, topic "trans id", "crack monkey" is offering one. This is in the US. Will be expensive shipping as well.
According to Ray Greenwood, the man who knows everything about this kind of car, the 411/412 gearbox is unique and parts are not available.
I do not know whether or not you could use a geabox from a Bus T2 and T3 (vanagon) that aslo used a type 4 engine between about '72 and about '83? Ray?
Good luck, Jan Peter

Yes there are variants here in Kenya but most are type 3's. Type 4's are very rare especially the mobile ones. I have converted my engine though, i have put a Subaru Leone 1600cc engine and it fits in and runs perfectly. I dont think the Bus T2 and T3 (vanagon) gearbox can work on the type 4, i have checked most of them but they are somewhat different.

Wow, a subaru engine huh. I must say I'd like to see that. That would be the first engine conversion I've heard of for these cars. Do you have any pictures?

I think the easiest would be to set in a Porsche 901 or 915 gearbox ! A friend of mine did that on his 73 412 stationwagon, and that was almost plug and play ! You will have to make a new clutchmekanism, but eksept from that its easy ! And it bolts right to the engine !

Yes...just a few months ago...I had a conversation here with...Shad maybe? But the 901/915 (from a 911) is almost the exact same dimensions...and has the identical tail cone design. It should plug right in. It may have a few shifter linkage issues to work out. Also, instead of trying to rig a clutch cable in the type 4, I would fab a bracket on the side4 of the tranny (like the 091 bus) and useth bus slave cylinder and a pivot bar. It should be a days worth of work. Ray
