Caspar the wires going to the battery are probably something someone has done in the past to wire in accessories. Basicly there should just be your pos and neg cables connecting your terminals, Sometimes there is a wire from the alternator to the Pos term but usually it just goes as far as the starter pos terminal which carries it to the battery anyway. I think if its not broke do`nt fox it. I would be more inclined to remove than connect if i did anything at all.
The bug and Thing fuel gauge sending units are interchangable but the Thing unit is specific because it has accomodation for attaching the cover. Its very easy to get around that with a larger washer and have a fuel gauge functioning again.
You can find the exact 181 sender from Mike Basso at Things Unlimited. Thanks for posting. Good luck. Bob Ingman

There are three stock wires near the battery which are for the dealer diagnostic plug and not needed for the car to be functional. The brown one goes to the battery end of the ground strap, the brown/white-stripe goes to the chassis end. The yellow/red-stripe one went to a center tap on the OEM battery.

yellow/red connects to a separate terminal lug on the battery. neither pos nor neg, it is in the top middle of the battery, a 1/4" male terminal.
it is almost certain that your battery does not have this terminal. there are NO batteries available now that have this terminal. it was incorporated on the original VW factory batteries to sense the electrolyte level inside the battery.
the other two attach to male lugs which are sleeved onto the battery ground strap terminal ends. it is like an 8mm ring terminal that terminates in a male 1/4" lug. one goes on the battery end of the ground strap and the other under the screw which fastens the strap to the floor pan.
the difference between the thingshop fuel sender and the generic one is that the thing specific one has a small stud to hold the thing-specific wire cover on the top of the sender. the other one does not have this. is it worth the extra? i don't know. i think you could easily modify the generic one to have the stud, and then it should work.
