Type III header on Thing

Post by GothingNC »

Just curious,

A friend of mine has a ceramic coated type III header and quiet pack that he doesn't need.

It seems to tuck up pretty nice from the road. Is there enough clearance on the Things rear apron and bumper to make it fit?

Thanks !

John probably no one here is going to give you an exact yes or no on this one. Personally if I had to make a guess I would be inclined to vote that it would. The Thing does not have that restrictive rear apron like the bug or the rear crossmember like a bus.
I have personally used headers for bugs,Porsche 914 (two versions) late bus header and late bus stock muffler on my Thing. All have cleared.
Probably trial fitting will be needed to determine for sure. Type 3 exhaust is a bit more involved than most. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Don't forget the heater boxes or j-tubes since they are not the same.

When I ran a T-1 cooling and a T-3 header I fabbed heater box linkage pivots so they would open and close like stock. Shroud to box was simpler.

This of course was not in a 181 but someone skilled with a welder and hammer could make it fit. :)

sideshow the signature says 73 thing no heat so hopefully heater boxes are not a problem. I have T-4 heater boxes in mine but have a gas heater so really they are just exhaust pipes. Take care. Bob Ingman

Maybe I should of said;

If you plan on running a T3-header get all of it because the J-tubes/Heater boxes are different. The exhaust leak would be deafening.

Thanks for the info guys.

I guess the only way to be sure is to trial fit it.

I am currently running J-Tubes and the T-3 parts he has are just the Muffler and Header. Are there different J-Tubes for the T-3?

I don't have to worry about heat since I only drive it From March Through November. Only when It's below 35 I start feeling cold and need to get the jacket out.

Not hard to find. From the EMPI catalog, I'm guessing 10-15$.
