Post by DeathBus »

Are the front disk calipers the same as a 914? My WAGON  needs new fronts.

Ray said the discs are the same, but I'm not sure if he meant calipers too in my post about brake discs. Anyway, busdepot.com has both early and late calipers listed. So, you got that wagon did ya'?

Heh heh....I would be stunned....nay!....slain! If you actually received the correct master cylinder from autozone for a type 4. I fell for that one a few years back too. They swore up and down....showed me all the info and part #'s. Paid my money...waited 3 days.....and it was ot even close. Thought it ay have just been that autozone. Tried it at 3 different ones in 3 different cities. They have no clue.

The calipers and discs are the same as 914. The early ones (discs and rotors) will not fit the late steering knuckle/spindle...and vica versa. Be sure of what you have. If your rotor has the raised cast ring, that fits through the wheel, around the center hub...they are late model. They can all be swapped from car to car...but the steering knuckle must go with it. So if you have a 411 and want better brakes, get the knuckles, rotors and calipers from a sept 72 and on 411/412...and they will all bolt up.
For best results, if you are swapping late knuckles, rotors and calipers to an early car...get the control arms from the late car too. The late control arms coupled with the late knuckles had an extra 5 degrees of static castor built in. Ray

Still, I think you should try getting the master cylinder from Autozone, you don't have to take them if they aren't the right thing, correct? The NOS ones I got I think are for a bus, d'oh! :(

Oh...I didn't say I don't still fall for it. I will let anyone who thinks they can order type 4 parts.....go ahead and do it. A good 10% of the time...it works. Thats about the same ratio as archeology 8) .
I know the bus uses a differnt pad. It most probably will not fit. The depth of the rotor is usually different making it need a different offset for the caliper. It would be worth comparing the two in person though. The rear calipers for some SAABs and Volvos will fit though I am pretty sure. Ray

Hmmm, I'll compare them next week and post a conclusion.

Might call Autozone also and see whats up......

EDIT :: Well looking at my calipers, I think one is already a bus caliper. I tired using my caliper rebuild kit on it and the piston diameters are to big for the rubber seal. I would assume both calipers should be the same??

No , most likely you have an early rebuild kit. the piston diameters were smaller. Ray

Thats what I was saying, the 2 I took off my wagon, the one from the drivers side had way bigger pistons than the one from the passenger side. But you say that would be an early Type 4 caliper and not a Bus caliper?

Edit :: also if I were replacing Brake lines which ones from other VW's work?
