Hey guys GREAT ADVICE, I dont claim to know everything, but I try to help others with what I do know, mainly from working on my vans. I enjoy throwing out what I do know and seeing what others like Ray and Wildthing have to add or correct me on. I feel every question is helping my knowledge grow. THANKS AGAIN!

Interestingly enough....the book actually mentions a bushing in the engine housing for the starter. I have never in my life actually seen one that contained a bushing...and never had a problem without one. Deathbus may be right. Check it though. Also, check to see if there is any odd metal or wear or roughness happening on the teeth of the ring gear. Maybe there is a fit issue. Ray

i now know that this car is my test in life to prove my worth to the almighty!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it started this morning and drove lovely.......
THEN...................
whilst going up a hill it just cut dead, nothing!
pulled in and called the AA, whilst waiting for them i had a look over it and noticed the fuel pump wasnt priming when the ignition was turned on, damn, i really dont want to buy a new fuel pump!
told AA guy my fears so he set to checking the electrics to the pump and it was fine after bypassing the relay, so next stop relay.....
so after 2 hours i decide to call it a day and got a tow home.
i then set to with the manual and wiring diagram. found out it was a burnt wire from the relay to the fuse box!!!!
one swift bit of wiring later all fixed...........
till next time

Yes! these cars are almost the ultimate test in AVCW's. Theye were complex. When most owners started to work on them they knew little. When the warranty ran out...other owners took them to mechanics that knew just as little. A lot of what you learn out of the "idiot book"...will not help you here. Yes...like the great man said (muir)...this will get you off the side of the road...but God help you if you don't keep your promises to it. Many things late in the life of type 4's get ignored...or done wrong. Thats why you have these odd problems.
Anothe problem is that these things rarely wore out. Almost nothing in any of the suspension got replaced during the life of these cars except maybe shocks. So...not only were ther not very many parts ever stocked for these things (cause no one ever asked for them)....but now...these cars are old...and they were heavily worn when they were parked. Ray
