Good price on Type 4 Bentley CD

Post by Chris Hobbs »

I was at the Maple Grove VW show near Reading PA today, and found a booth for a distributor of various Bentley service manuals and CDs. He did not have the 1969-1979 Types 1,2,3, AND 4 Bentley CD set on hand (list price 100 simolens). But he said if I emailed him an order request later, he could supply it for $68 plus shipping.

I told him I would inform the Type 4 forum, and he said all were welcome to email him for the same deal. Even better for him, so he could make a bulk purchase instead of just ordering one for me. Here is the info:

So there is indeed a Bentley for the 411/412?

I have never heard of one and it is not listed on Bentley's Web Site.

Someone would have to buy one and describe it to me. I know Bentley never produced a straight type 4 manual. A manual with types 1,2,3 and 4 would either have to be massive...or have rather sketchy and generic info on each. It sounds suspiciously like that chiltons types 1,2,3,4 book. Good only for propping up that short table leg. Ray

Good price on Bentley Type 4 CD

I think I found the CD-ROM referred to in the original post (correct me if I'm wrong...).

It's a CD-ROM of T1-4 factory service info...

http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=VFAC

It lists for $100 on the Bentley website. Interesting. Not a Bentley manual, but a collection of VW service microfiche info.

I will have e-mail..but I don't know about time or timing...and I will be 13 hours out of sync....so if I can't answer or say hello for a while.....I'm not ignoring you... 8) Ray

I believe this CD only gives the pictures of the VW microfiches, no part numbers or descriptions, just like the parts catalogues that VW used to sell.

I just got my copy of the Types 1-4 Bentley CD set in the mail today. It is the real deal, an Adobe Acrobat-style reproduction of the factory repair manual microfiche set as it was distributed by VWoA circa 1981-82. Right now I'm checking out instructions on how to replace various 412 front seat adjustment cables--something you won't find in Haynes or Clymer.

Looks similar in style to the hardcopy Bentley repros of earlier VW repair manals, and includes various technical bulletins as well. VWoA apparently combined all its aircooled vehicles into one integrated fiche set. So you go to the section on Electrical System, then select vehicle type, then choose what chapter you want such as Windshield Wiper System.

Unfortunately the pictures are fiche-quality so they're not as crisp as the hardcopy VW repair manual pictures that we're used to. Also, to run the CD you have to install and register Bentley's eBahn reader software. All in all, not bad for the $68 cost.
