Hell in a Bucket

Post by Chris181Westy »

I may be going to hell in a bucket baby but at least I'm enjoying the ride!

Finally got the 2187cc and super duty trans in my 181. Here are some pics at Silver Lake Sand dunes this past weekend. Many more pics in The Samba Thing gallery.

Looks awesome. Tell us about your suspension modifications. What type of heavy duty trans did you put in?

I had adjusters installed on my front beam, and had the shock towers modified to accept king pin style shocks. I went with some nice billet capped Fox shocks. But, I ran it without having any stops put on (dumb) and broke the shock bosses off. But I pulled the beam and am having it fixed and stops welded on, this will not happen again!
My trans is the av case trans that was in the car. It had it custom built mainly for use on the sand dunes but I will also drive it on the street. It has a new Klinkenberg 4.37 ring and pinion, super duty 3.40 1st, 2.21 2nd, welded 1.56 3rd and .82 over drive 4th installed.
Yes it is geared very low, I wanted to be able to crawl up the hills with 4 people in the car! Superdiff, some 3rd and 4th gear slider bushing up grade thing, a 091 side gear up grade kit of some sort, that allowed me to use 091 side flanges and a few other things I don't understand. I spared no expense! My trans bulder said we did just about everything one can do to a type1 trans.
For the $$ I have into it I wish I would have went with a 091. But I went with what I had and I am happy with it. It is geared way to low for daily street driving but when on the sand it is perfect.
