Junk, or not to Junk

Post by 67 T1 »

Finally got some pics of the 412s, two wagon and one fastback. The fasback reardeck is toast and home to ants. One of the wagons is a lost cause, maybe a few good parts or motor. The other wagon is in fairly decent shape, nice dash, motor looks untouched. Also threw in a couple of snaps of two buses that were on the back 40.

Hey, that pic of your wagon looks really good! The 4's at the shop look pretty toasted. A decent dash is hard to find, though, it seems they are probably attached to mint condition cars, plus if you want the A/C parts. Didn't they want $1000 or something? That sounds like a lot to me.

They look pretty neglected. Of course, I would have to see them in person to determine if I would tackle them or not. If they're parts cars only, I would be more inclined to offer about $100 each.

I've spoken to the owner once about a year ago, and yep, he wanted $1K for the one 412, the one in the pic with a/c and the nice engine. The pass door is almost rusted through at the bottom, and I'm sure there are similar areas in other places. Would like to get all three if only to give the two lost casuses a decent burial. $100 ea is much more in line with the condition.

Yep...I hate people who sell total wrecks for just too much. Now I'm going to get philosophical here...so pull up a beer.

Now do I suppose that there are $1000 worth in one of those wrecks? Not in one lump sum. If I had 1000 in one lump, i would spend it on something else. The only time I would stray from that philosophy in the case of one of those totally rusted hulks like that, is when the personnal inventory of the car would do a lot for me.
For those of you who have not totally stripped a 411/412 to the core....it is enlightening to do so. There is a huge amount of parts that could do well in your buckets of bolts. Lots of little parts and hardware. I firmly believe that to work on these cars you should have two of everyting at least.
The last one Il fully stripped was in 1995. Things to keep in mind when stripping one of these. There are lots of desirable parts that don't immediately meet the eye.
Rear suspension: Coil, trailing arms with stubs, sway bars, drive shafts.
Heater of course...and the wiring harness.
Every relay known to man, switches, door switches, lights, front light buckets, rear lights
All the latches, hood, trunk, door...and the cables.
The gas tank lid and cables.
The front suspension complete, can be stacked like cordwood when removed in a pile about 3x3x3.
Steering wheel, dome lights....
The automatic shifter and the switches and cable...those don't grow on trees
The dash, the wiper motor, the blower motor, cable slide assembly and all that ducting....great to have.
The fuse block, seat frames, seat belts and all plastic covers and hardware.
Door winders and internals
All glass
Fuel tank, sending unit
And lots and lots of hardware.

If you work on 412's and don't have piles of this stuff, you will sooner or later be left wanting. No..I would not give $1000 for any of those cars. But...if they had a good inventory and even 1 or 2 decent body parts...I might give $5-650...just to have the start of a good parts inventory. especially if it did have a block or tranny to boot.
The one I bought in Atlanta in 1995...I paid too much for. I paid 400. But...the man said take what you want...and I'll haul off the carcass. It was a shop on Moreland avenue. That was nice. I spent 3 days stripping it. It was a blue wagon. I took all but the rear fenders and hatch and the front hood and the front glass (I had little room and already had two windscreens). A week later..when I was broke before the paycheck came in...I resented spending $400 on junk. But since then...its been worth every penny many times over. Just some deeeep thoughts. Ray

67 T1,

The Vans look ok, but the Type 4's are TOAST, I might be interested in going in on some kind of deal with you though, ask the dude what he wants for all of it, and we can see what we can work out. I would be interested in the Vans if the floors are not completely gone and if the trannies are still there. And just like Ray says, when these parts are gone, they are gone! Let me know.
