I was over at my former workplace and found this 1970 411LE station wagon. From what I can tell, it's in really good condition. How I'd love to purchase it myself, but just don't have the room for it among the other projects.
I thought you'd guys like to see that there are some Type 4s on this side of the continent.
That has to be a gray market or one of the first. As far as I know, the 1971 model year was the first to actually import to this continent. I have only seen two 1970's over here. One is in a junkyard in OKC (4 door)..the other was in a front yard in atlanta 6 years ago.
I have never seen any type 4 on this continent sporting the model differentiation badge....ie: LE, L etc. Ray
I can assure you Ray, it is a '70. I was kind of skeptical too, but the VIN on the dash was 460 2..... I have a photo of the VIN around, but I did a double take on it.
I might have to investigate into this car a bit more, it might be worth freeing some resources elsewhere for it.
Nope, those were normal headlights on this one. Notice in the front view, the empty 5-3/4" light bucket. It just looks funny cause its missing the headlight bezel around the lights.
The 3 holes were probably from a badge that said "automatic". I have one from a 412 deck-lid that way. Or it could be a dealer badge.
The cyclops lights were europe only...and were optinal. They were a single dual filament , large reflector quartz iodine light. They would have been nifty. i believe they were an option in europe...not standard equipment. Ray
Actually, Ray, I believe that the '69 model year was the only to receive those headlights. Everything I've ever read and seen has stated this fact. I'd have to check my dealer parts manual to verify.
I was just looking at some pics and it looks like the euro cars had a "Variant" badge under the 411 LE badge, so that must be what the extra holes are for. Surely is a grey market car. Hey if you gotta have them, there is that set of NOS "cyclops" lights for sale for 350 bones on the samba, they're also listed on ebay at this very moment. I was browsing around the news section of the type 4 corner the other day, and found that little snippet about the '69 411 for sale that Cliff Crate had found a couple of years ago. I e-mailed him trying to find out if anything ever happened with it, but I haven't heard anything about it. Tuna, did you ever hear anything?
The last time I got an email from Cliff Crate, he'd decided to keep the '69 411 and restore it. It was a pretty complete car and didn't need a whole lot to bring it around again. That was a few years ago, so I don't know if it got started or completed.
I didn't believe him when he first told me it was a '69. I had him share the VIN number, and sure enough, it was a '69.
