Can you remove and replace the eberspacher heater with the engine/transmission in place ?
Currently I have my engine and transmission out of my 74 412 wagon, which gives me very easy access to the eberspacher heater. I want to do maintenance, replace what I can (glow plug, etc), replace all hoses and so on.
However, I'm pinched for time in order to make the B'ham Bug Blast on 29 August. After I replace engine/transmission, I still have other maintenance issues to work prior to putting on the road.
To Eber, or not to Eber,....that is the question.
Yes, you can remove the heater with the engine in ifnecessary. remove the hoses and exhaust. If memory serves, you will ahve to remove the blower and the flame trap on the end. Take the four nuts lose at the corners. The harness is zip tid onto a metal strap on the top. when it drops down far enough, clip the zip tie. Remove the plugs for coil and glow plug and then pul the fuel line. It should pull right out. Do not throw away any glow plug unless they are totally shot. They are like gold. I have replaced my fuel ine with steel tubing. Worth every penny of it. Ray
Thanks Ray. I'll go ahead and take it off while everything is out of the way. Replacing the fuel line is a keen idea. I'm sure my eber has not been used in 20 years. I'll look up old threads on getting it back operational. I know I've seen some, think I even printed them.
WARNING TO ALL! If you have an Eberspacher or any gas furnace...yor fuel linesl must be checked EVERY year. That means the ends clipped off to expose uncracked rubber...and then re-clamped. The hose itself must be replaced every other winter...RELIGIOUSLY. This hose...even the best quality....breaks down in very short orde, because its usually dry on the inside. It pays to take a piece of...I think I used 3/16" stainless tubing. Bend it to fit and run it all the way to the pump. Connect to the pump with a short length of hose. Thsi way, any potential leak is down low away from sparks and the heater. But it also leave s aflexible joint in the system. Up top, I used a 3/16" brass compression union. I had to sand very lightly the nipple on the furnace mantle. Then I had to clearance the ferrule inside of the union with rolled up 600 grit paper...about .010". Then the hole in the union nut. The whole thing slipped right on and tightened up. No leaks...ever. Ray
I took the Eber off yesterday afternoon. As I reached up to loosen the securing bolts, I realized it wasn't attached So I'm thinking the last guy who had this off was too Lazy to bolt it back on. Then I realize, all the bolts are in place, but they are all broken. Let me clarify, these ebers are retained with bolts that have a rubber cushion, it's the rubber thats broken, not metal. Also, this dragon has a slue of wires, so it will definitely go back in prior to tranny installation.
Yep....those little mounts are not hard to find though. They are all over on water pumpers. Look around near the radiator mounting points o golf, jetta, fox and Audis. Take one to the dealer and they can set you up on similar. The wiring is actually simple. Two to the glow plug, two to the coil, two in a plug that is in the top of the housing (high limit switch), 4 at the thermo couple down by the blower...(just loosen the nut and pull it out...leaving wires attached), a 4 pin plug on the blower. The rest runs down below to the pump and relays. You can...if your hand is small, also simply take the coil loose up top and leave it on the wires.
DO NOT pressure wash the body around the open blower motor. If you mess up the fabric looking stuff inside near the mantle area..it will owrk poorly. Ray
The main thing I'm doing with the eber is cleaning it up, looking for fraid or otherwise 'messed up' wires. Then replaceing all the heater hoses, and of course, the fuel line.
The main coil wire leading to the top of the glow plug was partially melted. Do you know of a source where I can find a replacement?
I always take multiple pictures of everything I do with the digital for later reference, especially of wires/connections.
Thanks for the tip on the mounting brackets.
You will notice..that the coil wire has screw on ends on most of them. If not, then you can use some of the 90* screw on terminals from audis's. But generally....just sacricfice a stock wire core wire. Works great. Ray
