Shims and thrust washers.

Post by John W. Kelly »

I notice no varity of shim sizes (all spacers, shims, and thrust washers each have one part# and therefore one size) on the main shaft gear stack. Does this mean that all adjustment setup is done on the pinion shaft?

You need to get the Long Enterprises Tranny CD. Great resource for type 1 tranny parts and questions. http://www.longenterprises.com/Rebuilde ... /index.htm See you soon. Tim

There is often some diddling with bearing race height and/or sleeve guide (hub) thickness on the mainshaft. But generally, more adjustments are made on the pinion.

According to the stock procedure you don't need to adjust anything on the mainshaft. There are very few components on the mainshaft for the error to stack up, so you don't have to worry about things.

With a stock rebuild, this is normally true. With aftermarket parts and performance builds, there is almost always an adjustment or two somewhere on the mainshaft.

Bruce is right. There is hardly anything to adjust on the mainshaft. You do have to check for clearance for the 3rd and 4th gears from the hub after you press it on. Other than that, nothing.

regards.
