Opinions on my 74 beetle setup

Post by Southernbug »

Greetings road racers,

Love the new forum. I'd like opinions on my initial setup for my 74 standard beetle. My intentions are to use is for autocross/SCCA on occasion. Here are current specs:

74 Standard Beetle "On a diet":
No rear Seat
No passenger Seat
Poly Bucket Drivers Seat
Lexan Rear and Quarter windows
Snap in side curtains (No door windows, regulators or window glass)
No running boards
No Carpet or headliner
No windshield wiper or wiper motor
No spare tire or jack
No bumpers (T-Bar style jack pads only)
Fiberglass decklid

~1500lb w/o me (lost about 250lbs total)

New SCAT 1600cc Engine:
009 with vacuum advance and compufire, w/Bosch Blue coil
Duals Kadrons (A.J. Simms modified)
Dual port heads, Single Hi-Rev Springs
Stock Cam, 1.25/1 Rockers on HD Shaft
1 1.2'" merged header
69mm Counter Weight Crank
12.5lb. Flywheel with stock clutch
1.5QT Gene Berg Oil sump
Koni Adjustable Shock on all 4 corners
20mm Adjustable Front Sway-Bar
24mm Adjustable Rear Sway-Bar
Gene Berg "Traction Bar"
Front Disc Brakes
Stock Right Height (Not Lowered front or rear "yet)
15 x 5.5" VW Steel Wheels
BF Goodrich Traction T/A 185/65 HR15 Tires Front and Rear

The running gear has been restored as well including shifter bushing, KONI steering dampner, shifter, new brakes shoes in the rear, etc.

Any advice or suggestions for ride height and castor/camber settings (For street/strip not race only) would be appreciated!!

Thanks,
Shane

For the front end i run 3 degrees of caster, 1 degree negative camber, 1/8 inch toe out, 2 inch dropped spindles, in the rear i run 2 1/2 degrees of camber, 1/8 inch toe in, and its lowered to match the front ride height. It sits on 205/50/15's so it is pretty low.

If you are running in SCCA you must fit into a class. I run my Ghia in the EP class. The minimum weight for a 1600cc motor in this class is 1680 lbs. If you are realy light you may have to run in a modified class. In the modified class your 1600 won't cut it.

Your mods look great!
