Help me Ray, help, help me Ray
Ray or anyone with good knowledge of inner workings of auto-tranny.
Got the auto tranny 'rebuilt' (new seals/gaskets) and put back together. Put the two drive shafts in. The small solid shaft went in, and I could engage the inner gears. I put the large hollow one in, and it seemed that I could not get it to seat. It seems to not mesh with the inner receptor.
Is it suppose to mesh up? Or does it 'ride' there and engages only when moving or engaged by the torque converter. Please don't tell me I've got to drop it again and open her back up.

Sorry that was me. I need the brown T3 book sorry. Man look at all the cut outs on that bell housing! Do you have to seat the converter like on american cars? It looks inplace! What does the engine side look like? I havent had a auto vw for many years when I had a t3 70 coupe that only leaked at the filler rubber boot. In my books its just said" install in reverve",lol! bill
p.s at least you are getting the oil pump to connect that in the book is key and I never knew about towing a auto since the pump only moves when the motor runs.....!

I hate to suggest this...cause you already have it in the car....but since the engine is not in...its fast work. Drain the diff oil if its already in. Drain the tranny fluid if its already in. The shaft you are speaking of is the turbine shaft. It should engage splines in the forward clutch unit. It slips all the way through the hollow pinion shaft. I would pull the tranny out. Carfully remove the differential section so as not to screw up your new seals....and then install the pump and turbine shafts. Then..simply oil them, and stab them through the pinion shaft while installing the final drive unit. Ray

bummer. Thanks for the info. I found a pic with tranny split and it shows the turbine shaft well below the oil pump shaft, engaged in the clutch.

DB, the 412 won't make it to B'ham on 29th. No way I can pull it again, fix it, re-install, then engine & wiring.
VWBill, I'll try and remember to take a pix of the engine side and post on thesamba, same link as above. I'll inform when done.

Take the tranny out. Before you dissasemble anything, tip the tranny up on its tail. The splines inside of these transmissions are very fine fit. Any misalignment due to gravity or play in the clutch assembly will make the clutch droop...and not allow alignment of the splines. It may be as simple as tipping it up to get the clutch centered. bada-bing, that's what I'll do. With my current streak of luck though, she'll be coming apart again.
I'm in the process of collecting my thoughts and pics of this process. I've got many 'lessons learned'. i.e. when removing many items, they need to be 'scored' for proper alignment when reassembling. (I didn't score the first item, then was like, 'how does this thing fit again?')

Well with the help of a friend with a mig welder I was able to weld a nut onto the broken stud. I backed it out, found some spare studs and was able to get my exhaust back together. Replaced tha alternator and now have electrics. So my 412 will MAKE IT TO THE SHOW. when you get there DONT LOOK TO CLOSE! You might see all the white crayon I use for paint and rust cover!

It worked !! After moving the engine out of the way, took the tranny out, stood her up on end, and with a little persation, the trust shaft seated.
All in all, still a pain, but beats having to crack her open again and ruining the new gaskets.
I've got the tranny back in, re-installed the engine, hooked the wires. Now just have to follow Ecdez's lead and clean the gas tank. Almost ready to roll.
While this has been a pain in the ars, I've learned tons about my car. What a great hobby,...I must be part sadist.

DB, 24th will be tough. Leaving for St. Louis this a.m., then found out my next two weekends are shot due to mil tng. So that will give me only a few weekday afternoons.
My intent is to thoroughly clean and reburbish the tank as discussed in past threads.
Who knows though, perhaps I may get real motivated and get it knocked out !
Oh, BTW, the CV joints/boots are perfecto.
