181/211 Flasher

VW's aircooled mini SUV. Great for riding in the country, or cruising the beach.

181/211 Flasher

My flasher has a bus part# so I assume its the unit from a bay bus. Can anyone tell me which color wires go to which connectors.

31 is ground, should be brown.
49 is power into the flasher, on your car it should be a white wire coming from the hazard switch.
49a is the flashing power out to the t'signal (and hazard) switch - it'll be blue, or black with green + white stripes.
KBL operates the pilot lamp on the dash, should be small blue wire with red stripe.

Thanks Marc. You willing to rewire this car if i ever get it to Kenmore? About everything works but the flashers. I just want to do it differently using a series of toggles. Will be installing a 914 cluster and will need to have the little lights hooked up in there too. Thanks again. Bob Ingman

It takes a couple of switches to perform the function of the hazard switch - remember, in addition to throwing the LH & RH sides together when the knob is pulled out it also is responsible for selecting the source of power for the flasher (in=from key, out=from battery) and you must be careful that you don't end up with a configuration that'll make it possible to hotwire the car by merely turning the hazards and the t'signals both on at once. It can be done with toggles, but the stock switch does it more elegantly.

Marc I was not at all clear in what I said.
I meant directionals not flashers. And by wanting to do it differently I was refering to the overall approach to switches and gauges. Sorry for the confusion.
The key is to be eliminated. This is mostly because the ignition position on the switch is out and I have already wired in my remote to a dash push button. Have a matching On/Off switch to be installed. The rest is basic toggle switches such as lights, heater, wipers, fuel punp etc etc. Good luck. Bob Ingman
