Think production numbers are listed either at Tom's Type 4 corner, or type4.org.
Using a search engine will be you to ether place. It's a little over 400K. Shortest production run for VW at that point, 1968 - 1974.
That's why VW looked at this car as a failure. That and the fact they sat on the lots. The price at the time was expensive, compared to the fair haired Beetle. People had sticker shock

The sticker price for my 2 door 412 from the documents...was about $4,200 in 1972. Yes...you could buy a Lincoln for that much. But they are great cars. Just a bit ahead of their time and a bit funky in styling. Ray

Post by vwbill »

Hey, what percent is still out there? One percent, Ten Percent?
If there are 50 States and You had maybe 100 per state runningish plus the other countries worldwide, maybe 2500 other, so 7500 give or take some range of 50 percent up, lol!!! So Really like 3K to 5k?????bill

I look at it this way. If you own one of our 411-412, you are going to seek others that have one. Find every site that has 411-412 owners, count those up. Multiply that number by two and that will give you the remaining 411-412s.

The answer is 236. There you go.

100 per state? Not a chance! A few years back when I was traveling in 13 states for al iving....I started trying to ascertain how many were tagged. The havens for these cars were the pacific northwest....and new england....with a large bastion in the center of the country like nebraska, texas and oklahoma...cold areas all in all. There are perhaps maybe a dozen in Texas....at most...still driving. Maybe a 100...in all of new england...and alot sitting around in the pac norhwest...but maybe 25-30 driving. I drove a million miles in 7 years...around 13-17 states...and saw 4 ...411/412. If there are over 500-700 drivable 411/412 on this contienent...I would be amazed. Ray

I know of only about 100 to 150 that are still on the road here in North America.
