$3800?...maybe. I believe on one hand that these cars are worth something more than the blue book when kept well. Bear in mind....even that car needs a complete suspension rebuild....and a gearbox "go-through"...or else...full time daily driving at that milage level will put it down quick. A 2.0 hydraulic engine in that package? Oh well...to each their own. The wheels are nothing special and add nothing to the price. Those are identical to the basic 5.5 steel chromies...except the yare not chrome (which in itself is a plus). I would say its worth $2.8k max....until I got a look at it. If it had no rust in the rear hood and the original engine....it would be worth $3800. Ray

I have to admit that pricing on 411s and 412s is more voodoo than anything else. It's sad in a way that even great cars have a hard time fetching $5k, but then again good for enthusiasts who can get good deals when buying.raygreenwood wrote:$3800?...maybe.
Imagine you wanted to buy one of these outrageously priced other old VWs, like the Type 14 Karmann Ghia or any Bug convertible (cars that basically *everyone* has...).

Well we are all victims of being "early" in the movement of 411/412's. We are guilty of wanting to have these cars cheap...because until recently, we have been getting what no one else wanted. Add to that...even a 411/412 that looks pristine in every way....like the two door inquestion here....in reality will need about $1500-2000 in work to make it a reliable daily driver. We balance that knowledge in our heads when loking at a nice car. A lot of the current sellers on E-bay and elsewhere....do not have that knowledge. they are simply cleaning out their dead granny's garage. They think these cars are "drive em off the lot" ready. A bug? maybe.... But at the same time, we all know the qualities and the rarity of these vehicles and we know they "should" be worth a damn better price than what the "blue books " list. This is not even a resale issue, because I don't plan to sell mine. Its just that a short while after starting to drive a really good running 411/412...it dawns on you that these are really excellent, unique , under appreciated cars. I want the prices to go up....so people will take notice and quit scrapping these cars...or letting them rust into oblivion. But....I am also guilty of being used to getting what I need for cheap. I have had only 3 years since 1979....that I did not own and drive a type 4, 411/412. We are just on the edge of the change right now. Back in 1988-93...I could get a type 3 fastback for about $150-200. I could get a squareback for the priceof towing and a six-pack of beer. Look at them now.....but look at what was lost by those who saw no value in those years. We are lucky that the 411/412's are coming out of the woodwork. At the same time ...we are cursed because now our little private pleasure...just got expensive. Ray
