Thing at Barrett Jackson

Post by Bruce2 »

Darrell Baker's old Thing is listed to go on the block next month at the Barrett Jackson auction. You will remember this one, featured in the Jan '03 of hotVWs.

The auctions at B-J bring some really high prices ... but you don't usually see many ACVW's featured during the prime bidding blocks. The big bucks seem to go toward American muscle and resto-rods. Hope he gets a bundle for it.

You never know what will happen at BJ. I've seen VWs sell during the economy slots on Thurs/Fri, only to be re-sold for much more on Sat/Sun.

BTW, Darrell sold that Thing in early '03 to someone in AZ. His current project is a 58 Euro slider on Gasburners with a Berg 5/IRS pan. AFAIK, he's from your neck of the woods. You ever run into him there Dave?

The only Air-Cooled I have seen at B-J is Jody Fosters black Super Bug Convert. There basicly isn`t enough potential profit in them to make it worthwhile. Most of those cars begin where the VW market would top out $40,000+. Bob

Check out the BJ site Bob. There's 10 VWs there, most aircooled.
When I was at the BJ auction 4 years ago there were plenty of VWs. I was even surprised to see a former Vancouver car there. The guy who built it sold it a year before, then the new owner took it to BJ.
I recall a nicely done 63 sunroof Beetle that went for around $12k. A pre 67 Westy was sold twice at the same auction, the first buyer flipping it later in the weekend.

I had a good laugh a couple of years ago while watching the BJ coverage. On the block was a 79 Convertible Bug. The bidding stalled around 6k. The announcers were discussing what a great bargain someone was going to get. Initially I agreed, until the on-stage camera man panned by the engine. There was a stupid carburator where it should have been EFI. Neither of the announcers knew this. That low price reflected the fact that the car can't be registered in most major cities on the continent without significant engine work.

I've seen the car (not lately) ... but never met the owner. Perhaps its a good thing that the ACVW's don't get as much SPEED chan. coverage. If word gets out to the "general populace" on the prices that are paid at B-J ... the hobby would attract the cutthroat speculators. I know ... one look at thesamba ads on splits, notchbacks, and razors (t-34's) makes me think they've (cutthroats) already arrived.
