heater smokes

Post by steve_1125 »

Tried the heater twice and each time I get a little smoke out of the right vent only, abruptly turn it off. Thinking it might just be burning up a leaf or be from lack of use but I am too nervous to keep it on. Wouldn't mind getting it too work but perhaps it hasn't been used for too long. Any opinion would be appreciated
Thanks :!: Steve

p.s. what happened a few days ago, there was a hacker posting from it appeared Russia at this site? Anyone else notice?

Nothing better to do than hack a forum apparently. Obviously only good enough to get the front page though because the rest of the froum still worked.

If there is smoke coming out, I personally wouldn't use it. This thing is 30 years old and who knows what could be wrong, but smoke probably isn't a good sign. The bad thing is that you have to take the engine/tranny out to get to it. Maybe a good weekend project, and check out everything while you are under there.

I take it that you're talking about the eber aux heater? Not just the regular VW forced air off of the exhaust manafold.

Heck no, I wouldn't use it either! You're dealing with gas with the eber. If you're going to use it, it needs to be gone over and good. I think though, you can take it out without dropping the engine/tranny. But it would be any easier either way. Probably less busted knuckles if you just go ahead and drop the engine/tranny.

Take the heater out. Inspect it through the ports. Chances are...you should find no rust. What you will find, is that it is plugged with oil that blew into it from a valve cover gasket leak that fouled the heat exchanger on the header. You can degrease it. But...avoid using high pressure spray on the asbestos clothmantle area inside of the blower chamber. It will tear it up. There is little or nothing to go wrong inside of these. A rust peforation is the only thing that can get you...or a perforated mantle. Both of which will put exhaust inside the car...but not on one side only. A leak in the inner chamber puts exhaust everywhere. Smoke on one side is oil in the pipe, ducts, chambers. Ray
