Build a 1776?

Post by radioman »

Imagine (if you can) that I save enough money as a 62 yr old retiree, to build a 1776 for my Thing. Please give me advice on which case, which C/B crank, cam, heads, cylinders, exhaust, etc. I want a bit more punch but with near bullet-proof life. I can put the engine together (some experience and a good helper) but I am concerned that since I must mail order parts to the East Coast, that I select THE BEST PART AND THE BEST VENDOR. I am thinking that "dual baby Dellortos (??sp??) seem to be a carb setup that many use. Is that right? Where do I get them and can they be made to work. Help :? . Have worked on my 73 Thing for 2 1/2 years and it is just like I want....maybe I should stay stock...but I would like some more umph......and I am a bit in need of a new VW project. :D thanks

Dellorto FRDs haven't been available (new) for some time to my knowledge. Weber 34ICTs are very similar and available.
I would go with an 88x74 combination (1800cc) instead of a 1775 for a heavy brick like a Thing.
