First, take a look at this free 412 @thesamba:

What are the pitfalls here? Besides the obvious rebuilds, if it's a German import, will the missing carbs be an issue replacing? Should one, or rather, could one place a 73' US injected system in it's place?
I'm interested because we've had a loss recently. Our 73 wagon was totaled by a hit and run driver and we have a perfectly good drivetrain at hand.
What are the problems to look for in the possible North American/European hybrid?
BTW: The 412 IS safe. We hit a full size Chevy Silverado that ran a red light at about 40mph. My girlfriend and I were belted and safe-just a few aches. The guy that hit us tried to drive away, but we had hit him so hard that the Chevy failed to move properly-so he ran. We limped to the curb, but at least we limped.

Glad to hear you're OK.
I doubt it's an import, more likely that somebody installed carbs to replace the FI at some point. If you wanted to replace the dual-carb setup, many options are available, but not terribly cheap. But hey, the car is free! Possibly some of the provisions for the FI would still be there if you wanted to go that route. If you wanted to make the effort, I would think this would be a good opportunity for you to replace your wrecked car.

Doutful that there is any thing more German or more true about this one. Roof racks were an option. I have seen tons of them in the past. The carbs were probably installed later. A pic of the engine compartment would help to know that. Also...its an automatic. It was quite rare to see an automatic in Germany. But it looks great for he price
