Odometer

Post by waynek »

Hi all,
Since winter is now upon us,I'm starting my needed repairs and upgrades on my 74' Thing.
My odometer does not work but the speedometer does.I know there was a post a while ago with a link to a site that shows repairing a bug style
speedometer. What I need is a source to replace any parts especially
the gear that fails.
Any help on this.

Thanks, Wayne

A few solution here to offer.

Contact Mike Humeston at

http://myweb.cableone.net/humeston/

He rebuild speedos very well and is a bvery nice guy. He ran a outdoor touring company for years in Idaho. He has now sold that company adn does VW Thing resto. He has parts also.

Buy any VW Bug speedo from the mid 70s at a bone yard or swap meet or garage sale. Take your chances that the gear asn shaft are not split. 75% of the gears are that way on these.

Take your speedo apart and find the bad parts then contact Mike Basso and buy the parts you need form him.

There was a great article in VW Trends about two years ago on the rebuild procedure for thsi. I used that procedure and fixed and odometer suscessfully.

Buy a speedo off eBay.

Get a GPs and forget the speedo completely.
