From memory, the overheat...or high limit switch, is supposed to break circuit at just over 500F. I have never had it actually turn off the heater because there was an overheat. The two main things that actually cause this switch to function....or the heater to overheat, are large clogs in the cooling air fan flow to the heater, or grossly too high fuel flow.
There is one more problem. This switch looks like a small disk. It has a drimped connector at each side. If those connectors are bent somewhat, the underside of the rolled connector crimp, will contact the metal of the body on the disc of the switch. It may be naked to the eye. But...it will cause the switch to short. If you follow the green wires down to the inline fuse...and to the black safety switch...those are the two parts that keep tripping when the high limit switch is shorted. Ray

Yes,i have one like that also, The rubber cover is very nice, and the two terminals are soldered on. But they can have the same problem. Be very careful in inspecting the places where the solder is. If either termina lmakes contact to the body of the switch, it can cause a short.
It is also possible to replace this switch with a fusible link. It is just an emergency device....important..yes! But exceedingly rare to be used...except on systems that have been allowed to fall in disrepair or age. With a fusible link, you will have to rewire the system to make this a ground breaker for the black safety reset switch...instea of a current line. Ray
