Finally bringing it to the states

Post by Bucko »

After a year of debating, I finally paid to have my buddies 1971 Military 181 brought to the states. He gave me extra curtains, all doors, hood, windshield, fenders, and even an extra gas heater. This "Thing" is cool, in that it has a crank that can be used to start the engine up in the event of a failed starter or weak battery.

I know this may be wrong to those "purists" in the states, but the Germans still refer to them as the kuble wagons.

My question: is there a place where I can get an original top for it? I'm guessing it was an olive drab color to match it's paint, but I'd even settle for a black one as well. Will the "Thing" tops fit these original military 181's?

The 'Thing' top (civil version) will fit the military 181. There is no difference.

Hello

The Thing Shop used to sell olive green tops.

There was also a guy (from California if I remember correctly) who tried to sell such tops using thesamba.com

Timing is everything. I recently traded a Guild OD green soft top for a black one as my final plans changes. The top I traded was a very perfect original German constructed military soft top. K-mann
