A couple more questions

Post by Bucko »

The military 181 will be in the states in March. I need a couple of parts to keep it "original", other than the top:

1) Anyone have a speedometer for a 71, that has kilometers instead of MPH on the faceplate? Or the glass for a speedometer? The one on this 181 has the glass broken, so I'll need to either replace the glass or the whole unit. If there's no glass or kilomoeter speedo available, will a 71 speedo work with the "correct" indicators in the faceplate (oil, turnsignal, gas gauge, gen/alt)?

2) The key was lost and the ignition switch is also bad, as the previous owner tried to jamb a screwdriver into it to get it to turn. Will a 71 ignition switch work for these military type 181's?

3) Anyone know where I can get an original olive drab (or military green) top for this "thing"?

Check with Mike Humeston on the speedo. Not only is he a great guy. He is a speedo expert. If none of the options pan out pmail me and I will get you the speedo you seek. I have anohter source for this item that is less than easy to make happen but is good in price but long in effort. K-mann. The OD-Green top will come from the same source. Timing is everything. I gave him the top that I should be sending you. And so it goes. I lost perhaps $250 on that one.... Good thing we are all in this for passion of a great car and not $.... It was like the era when I was doing perfect resto on early 60s verts and I sold a guy a perfect interior rear view mirror for $20 and the next day a guy came int my shop and offered me $200 for the same item that I no longer had. At the time you could buy an IROC pan for $150.. K-mann

A thousand thanks if you can locate the green top and/or a speedo Kubelmann. Should we email offline on this?

Hello!

A small missing detail is that all the ex-army 181s have one more indication led in the faceplate of the speedo a purple led than is on when the heater is in operation.I have a ton of them also ingnition keys and just any part you need as I have 30+ 181s for spares. The only bad is the shipping from here.

good luck

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a break down of what exactly separates a civilian 181 from the military version? What are all the little gizmos on the military version, etc?

I'm willing to pay shipping. What do you want for the ignition switch (with steering lock; includes black wire harness that slides down into steering shaft right?). Also, how much for the speedo? Yes, I do have the gas heater....

One item was a lever on the left side of the dash (left of the steering wheel). This lever allowed the military to run the lights at full (normal) brightness, or flipping the lever ran the headlights at a lower candle power.

They also used the oval style Bus taillight lenses, had gas heaters, and had flag holders installed on the left and right side front bumper. Inside, they had clips to store rifles, and all were painted olive drab (inside and out) with the top being the same color too.
