Oh, are those steering wheels desirable? I think they are pretty cool, but I am kind strange... I think there may be one on ebay right now. I believe that this guy has a bunch of Type 4's, and was or is running some sort of Type 4 car/parts business, or was trying to at some point. I think he posts on the yahoo 411/412 thing? I can't remember, I hardly go there. Oh, FYI on the steering wheels, the 412 unfortunately doesn't seem to have the same year breaks when it comes to steering wheels as the other aircooled cars. Even the late '74's don't have the newer steering shaft/spline size that interchanges with early watercooled cars and some Porsches.

There were only two steering wheels offered from factory on 411/412. They were early....like 68- mid 71...a three spoke model....kinda cheesey when it gets old...but unique. And...the standard beetle/type 3 wheel that came on all type 3's and all late type ones up to the major dash change in the super. There are jillions of stock steering wheels laying around out there that fit. Ray

That car is a deal if you consider that I paid $300 for my '73 that is identical to that one, and it is an absolute disaster needing a ton body work and everything else. I wish I could buy 'em all!
It's really too bad there is a such a vitriolic hatred for the later air cooled cars in some circles. I know that there are a few of you dedicated Type 4 troopers out in California, but that seems to be the center of it, and the Type 4 cars seemed to be particulary scorned there. Visit thesamba.com and it is apparent. I understand the charm and purity of intent of the early Volkswagens, but really I prefer the "fat chicks" myself.

I ask other stock "bug" people...these questions alot. It pisses them off. things like....when tooling around town ...in traffic in dallas in July,....my buds are just B*tching...and sweating to beat the band....and smelling the engine overheat. Then...they are whining about not enough room to carry their junk...and squirming in their uncomfortable seats....and complaining about the engine noise level drowning their crappy stereo...and whining about the handling through curves and having to slow down....then in winter...whining about the no defrost and no heat. Every time...I point out that VW fixed all that in the 411/412...and gave it better hp...and heat...andair...and handling....and seats...a room........and its aircooled to boot. I ask them....so are you just in love with the shape of the bug...or what? Ray

The only Beetle I ever owned I burned to the ground!ubercrap wrote:Good grief, those same-type people complain about that stuff? The early Beetles and other early VW's in stock form are remarkable and wonderful antique vehicles to be revered and collected in their own right, but to me, they are just that, antiques. Not really what I'm into.
