cv options

Post by mstatedog »

upon disassembly and inspection of my thing's rear axles I discovered that my thing sports a 71 type 1 transmission with type 1 cvs on the transmission side and thing cvs on the wheel sides. The type 1 cvs will not present an angle problem on my lowered thing, the axles are horizontal with the ground. This set up does not allow the axle clip that holds the thing cv to be installed....I assume the thing axle is slightly different or wider here for the thing cvs.

My question is.....if I change to type 1 stub axles at the wheels to allow installation of type 1 cvs at the wheels, will I need to change bearings on this axle? Is the thing stub axle larger in diameter? Can I retain my thing rear drums?

thanks,

The bearings are the same.
But the Type 1 stub had a 4-bolt drum.
I'll just bet (don't know for a fact) that there is some difference in the axle lengths.

Type 1 stubs and thing stubs are different flange diameter but use the same size bearings in the trailing arms. Thing stubs have a 100 mm flange Type 1 is smaller. Jim, you are confusing stubs with drums. The drums slide on the splines of the stubs and are held in place with a 36 mm nut. Thing axles are thicker than type 1 axles but both are the same length. Thing drums are wide five 5 x 205 like an early type 1. Late model type 1 went to 4 x 130 pattern. K-mann

Yeah, I knew the drums were 5-bolt and '69 and up Type 1 were 4-bolt.
And bearings were the same.

Still not clear if he can use Type 1 stub axle with 5-bolt THING drums./

Yes. The only difference is in the diameter of the CV flange. My son's got Thing drums on the back of his `77 bug, they're a direct fit. The Thing drum is deeper (even though IRS Thing brakes are no different, the drums are much wider at the friction surface) so there's less "snout" protruding past the lugbolt plane, but the length of the splines is the same - the track width is increased ~¾" per side compared to a 5-lug bug drum.

For those of you unaware, that is a real live pic of a Thing drum. One thing to consider is that the axles of a t-1/Thing/944 and so on are of various flex and strength rates. Each of these axles has buldged rings on the axle surface of each axle shaft of various number and thickness. These rings communicate the properties of each axles. K-mann
