unable to engage into 1st gear after engaging into reverse

Post by Haridev M »

after a long drive, i find it reli difficult to engage the car into 1st at a stop. this usually happens more frequently after reversing a certain distance. the car is at a total stand still but it just wont fall. after a few seconds of clutching and forcing it falls in place. sumhow i can get it into second and all other gears with ease. i have just changed the selecter bush in front for he gear shift. i realised this problem only after fitting it. what do u guys think is the matter?

If there was no such problem before replacing the bushing it may be that the Reverse lockout plate is catching and you'll be able to cure it by fiddling with the position of the shifter & plate.
It could also be coincidence - the symptom you describe is often caused by one end of the 1/2 shift fork breaking off; the remaining two contact points with the 1/2 slider are about 90° apart and tend to tilt it, making it bind like a stuck desk drawer. If this is the case, you'll usually have better luck "jiggling" the shifter into 1st than you will by pressing hard on it - shifting into 2nd and then into 1st often works better too. You should make sure the fluid's full (I'd change it if it looks nasty or has more than ~50K or so on it). Often the investment in synthetic fluid will make a tired trans shift a lot slicker too.

i think you absolutely correct bout the stuck drawer thingy. thing is when the engine is off or when the engine is cool, the shift into 1st is effordless. once the engine is a lil warmed up, it starts to become a stuck drawer. ive just replaced the transmission oil. the old oil was muddy. thanks a lot your your input
