at what voltage does the FI system say, 'no more, i am shutting down'? just curious since the other night, on the side of the road, everything else worked except the FI when the battery started loosing voltage. event he starter turned.
i know that when the voltage drops, the fuel mixture goes rich, but that is really as far as it goes for my knowledge.

I thouught I had read somewhere that it is about 9.5 volts. You could easily be having more voltage loss to the FI than to other parts. Check that the relay on the inside of the engine compartment is making good ground. Check the ground strap a the battery and at the tail cone of the tranny. Check the ground bundles on the case centerline under the plenum. Ray

Wagens are sweet
Is the wagen like a T3? Do they have the stuff under the rear seat? In my sedan I think its in the engine bay left wall. You wagen guys get to sit in the back area like a bus and work! Got to love that engine cover flat lid! I have to bend like a pretzel, lol! bill

Since the EFI brain is not a digital computer, but is completely analog, it's a matter of how much degradation to the various functions performed by the analog computer can the system stand with reduced system voltage. 9.5V sounds reasonable, the starting system load can drop the voltage below 10V while starting in the winter, and the EFI has to handle that situation and still work reasonably well.

I agree that 9.5 volts should be correct as most electronic control systems are set to that magic number. try checking your master relay first. if you have the wagon it should be in the rear passenger seat side panel on top of the ecm. also check your fuel pump relay it can be either down on top of the fuel pump or just under the steering column. both relays are the same. if they both check out as ray was saying check that all your grounds are good, especially the main ecm ground on top of the engine under the plenum. also make sure that the power wire runing from your battery directly to the master relay is connected clean and tight. that happened to me once car just stopped engine turned over everything worked except the FI.
