With Turbo and Super charging you can create massive horsepower with vw motors.

Still Need help, 2.6 liter turbo

Post by John massengale »

I built a 2.6 liter Porsche 914 Motor, 78mm by 103mm. It has JE Forged pistons, Pauter Machine 1.48 to 1 ratio rockers, The compression ratio is at 7.3 to 1. It has Dual Webers 44mms. I have them jetted. I have a turbo I want to put on it in a blow through application. I have TURBOMANIA and read it. The book is very helpful, but in almost all cases the modifications are told in the use of Dellorto carburators. I have Webers, it says that the Webers don't have any room to machine to put seals on the shafts. I do have the option to use a air dam. (pipeing boost air to the shafts), Dose this work well? I would rather not have the loss of air. I don't plan to use more than about 10 psi. Do any of you guys have any experience using Weber 44s in a blow through application? I plan on using the Webers, modular rings, smaller air jets, and maybe water-alki salutuion injection. Also do you know if the float can be used or do I need one that won't crush. I guess the main questions are have you guys used the Weber 44s for this? What did you have to do to them? And where did you get the parts, seals and machine work done? Am I better off starting off with Dellortos? Thank you for any input and help. I am close to Seattle in Washington State. Thanks again

Hi John. I have never used the Webers for a blow through application but, maybe you can take one of the existing bearings out and go to a good bearing supply house and see if they can cross reference the dimensions to a current bearing that has seals made in it. I would personally exhaust this option before I started to drill all over my carbs and running turbing for pressure seals.

I have read the CB Performance book that you were talking about, and I am not too impressed with it. The modulator rings are a band aid for too large of a venturi. Too large of a venturi creates less of a negative pressure signal for the emulsion tube to read from. I would try the smallest venturi you can put in the carbs before I would go to the modulator ring. I have been told by Corky Bell @ Bell Engineering Group, Inc (also the owner of Cartech Racing) that the stock carb will work fine up to a little over 6 psi boost. Above that, you need to create a stronger negative pressure signal to the emulsion tubes ( small venturis).

If you decide the mods to the carb are your only way to go and cannot find anyone willing to do the work, email me (robtynmann@aol.com) and we can talk about me doing it for you. I am in San Antonio, TX so there will be a shipping charge involved, but the work will be done correctly.

Good Luck,

I want to make two points.

1) you are never going to keep the heads from leaking unless you use copper head gaskets AND 5th/6th stud the head, case, and cylinder.

2) why you aren't going to use FI instead is beyond me. It's FAR more versitile, and you have more power potential, though it will cost a little more.

I'm currently designing a supercharger kit for the upright engine, but it could also work on an upright T-4 without difficulty. Of course, a FI system will be incorporated, and I'll be using the FI system first on an aspirated engine. I'm checking out two systems right now, and may be doing testing on both. I'll keep you posted.

Yes I do know that Fuel Injection is the best, I know it already and people keep telling me, I have duel 44 Webers, I do not have money for FI , I have the origonal FI that was on the 1.8, I want help for using the Webers, I know people do it and I want some input on this. I thank all the folks that do. Thanks again, John

I just think you are better off to sell the webers and put that $ towards the FI.

I have been running turbo engines for 15 years (VW), and though guys are running webers on those engines, I have NEVER seen one yet that worked well.
