Actually, I have little problem with the German look. It mostly originated in Europe, and one of its hallmarks....as Uber noted...is mechanical proficiency and mechanical improvement. In short....it may look cool but if its not functional....its not cool in the German look.

As to why the yellow 411 has not sold....thats simple. There are really only two types of people who would buy that lovely car....well maybe three.
(1) Most of us. And that being said, most of us either have enough expensive projects on our hands to not allow us to buy a realtively expensive 411 (probably worth $1500 in the long run)....or the fact that we know that $1500 is just borderline on being more than we want to spend...cause we know (among ourselves) just exactly what that car entails. Yes...its straight....and relatively rust free.....BUT....its the oldest of the lot on the continenent. Its got high miles, which means it needs all new suspension, a rebuild on the tranny.....it does not have the original engine so IMHO....what it has in it is just a core. The interior...though OK...is basically worn out. Its a great restorable car...but unfit for daily driving...without about $4000-5000 in work.
(2) The other types are those who are just getting interested in type 4....mainly from the standpoint of recent publicity of the type 4 engine. they are intrigued....but are used to being able to start a "bug" project by buying a clean hulk for $500...and adding parts from the ground up. Their mind still says its worthless cause its not a bug or a van. Its too much for a starter for the average person.

(3) The third type is the complete newby with money who may stumble upon this cool looking vehicle and buy it outright. Problem is...that type does not frequent the place where this ad is.

This car would sell better if it were in the $1000-1200 range. Ray

As I am finding out, WE are it, WE are the ones who keep the 411/412's going, thats right those of us that post here. I would say there are about 10 others who post to the type 4 list that dont post here, but thats it. You are talking about a group of enthusiasts that MIGHT number 100. Think about how many people are into the other ACVWs and you will get where I am coming from. I think that sums up why that car has not sold. (Added into what Ray and others have said)

Two other things with this car in particular:

(1) $1500 isn't just the opening bid, it's the opening bid with a reserve price.

(2) No shipping. It's a California come-and-get-it. If this showed up last June before I bought my Super Beetle, I might have (over)bidded for it ... and paid shipping to the east coast ... and sunk another $4000-5000 into it. But no shipping would have meant an extra expense to fly out and ship it and return, or a seven-day window to drive it cross-country. So if there is another nut in my mold willing to put money into something that'll never be returned, he excluded him.

I so very much agree with all of the observations by all.

Is that link serious? What happened? I hate it when people won't stay out of other people's business. I'm all for laws and restrictions that keep people from doing stupid things in public places/roads, or in issues that effect the whole country/planet, but come on, what the hell happened to the concept of private property? If your neighbor isn't doing something to offend you sometime, you probably aren't living in a free country! I can see in town if the car was on somebody's front lawn instead of their driveway, but come on, out in the boonies? There was a time in this country where you could escape such nonsense by avoiding California like the plague. Putting money and effort towards enforcement of things like that is the kind of crap that flushes tax money down the toilet and we need to utilize every cent wisely, as for one thing, the infrastructure of this country is crumbling!

AH the dreaded crusher rules!

Post by vwbill »

I think they actually have that rule in my city! But I dont see too much enforcement unless it is a real eyesore! Although one day a county(white) truck pulled up in front of the house and I didnt see where he went and later I noticed my cover on my 412 was moved so someone could see my tag!
I think if you dont have it tagged and insured they could do something and my car is on the side of my carport and I think any car has to be on a driveway area! Crazy! I wonder if you could get some kinda license to be using the car as a parts source for selling or use though like a home business, lol! There goes another form of mechanical expression, lol! I do admit I do like that feeling of working on that part to get it loose and then making it look like new again! I wonder were guys like Boyd Coddington would ever get a old 34/35 coupe or sedan or woody to bring back to life and sell for 100,000 along with just the beauty of the design if the rule was crush anything that looks old! I guess I better keep a eye out soon too! LOL! bill

This is pretty close to where I live. If anybody is interested and needs me to go look at it or whatever else, let me know. If I had the space, I'd take it :(

In Texas, or at least Forth Worth where my nephew is a cop, they must be able to see a license plate on it. There is a woman that has a vet under a carcover that hides the plate. He will go there and remove the cover to check the plate. She has been warned about it, and hasn't done anything about it, so he goes buy when nothing is happing and pulls the cover off it.

I know it seems bad to do that, but I guess it breaks up the day.

My son's factory car cover for his Corrado has a clear vinal spot for the rear plate to show through.

Yup, the law generally states that if you will place your vehicle on the public domain, it must be readily identifiable. I put a window in my wife's Mitsu car cover but I am the only one in the whole neighborhood that did that. Cops here don't care for such minor details. There is enough gangs and freeway shootings to keep them busy I guess.
