daily dry sump

Post by Rip »

this may be a stupid question but I'll ask anyways. Would let say a CB preformance dry sump work well for daily driven use?

I'd have to get a smaller pulley, so the fan would turn slower, hook up a oil heater, and at idle the pressure would be less than wet sump, but could one be used on the street without problems? Anyone attempt this before?

thanks

Sounds like you're aware of the weaknesses. No reason why it couldn't be done IMO. After sitting for a few days it's not unusual to find a lot of oil has seeped from the tank to the crankcase - too much and you don't want to try to crank the engine before draining it down. Routine thing to check before firing a race motor, but could be forgotten on a driver.
Adding (and using) a low-restriction isolation valve would eliminate that potential problem, but you'd probably want to rig a microswitch to give you a starter interlock (or at least a warning light) when it was shut.

thanks, but would there be a over heating problem? My only real concern is in stop and go traffic, where I might be stuck at idle.

Would the combination of a smaller pulley and the lower oil pressure be enough to cause the engine to heat up to much?

thanks again

I have been running a dry sump on my daily driver for a few years now with out incident. The bottom of my external oil tank is at the same height as the bottom of the engine sump and I haven’t had any problems with the case filling up over the 4 months that it is stored every winter. I put my filter on the scavenge side and debured the inside of the pump and although I don’t have a gauge I would guess I had more pressure at lower flows because I don’t have the drop across the filter. I added a 356 alternator pulley to compensate for the power pulley that I had to add for clearance, so my fan speed is a bit faster than stock. I have no problem with cooling and run a stock doghouse and T1 cooler with no external oil cooler, 2275, 86B etc.

thanks bruce, but just wondering how hot does it get in BC? I'll be running a DTM on my type IV, so I may just have to add an ext cooler and I should be fine.
