CV Boot, Grease, clips 'n bolts kit

The VW Thing shares exact CV related parts with the following other VW/Porsche cars:

T-4 cars
Porsche 924-944 1977-1985 (early)
T-2 Bus
73-73 Thing

and perhaps other vehicles that run 100 mm CVs I have failed to list.

My point is this,
Does anyone out there have a source for a kit that includes highest quality CV boots, moly grease packs, CV bolts and washers, concave washers and axle circlip retainers for 100 mm CVs?

k-mann,

i think the rockford boots are the best. tim gud has them on two of his VW's send him a pm and see what he thinks.

the rockford kit does not include the bolts (everything else), but i have new german ones for 1.00 each ($CAD).

I have read a number of places that the Rockford boot have issues with cold weather. Anyone have knowledge of this limitation. It is kinda dumb that I am even worried about boots. I can drop a complete axle, disassemble, clean and service in way under 2 hours. This does depend on how long the axle has been on the car. BtW a tempered M8 splined hex bit does a great job on both styles of CV bolt heads. I jsut got some and I really like them. Nothing will replace the Hazet tool for this purpose. Sadly that item ended up beyond my budget. K-mann

There is no comparison between the rockford and the meistershatz boots. (The meistershatz boots were removed because 3 of the 4 split in alittle over a years time.)
The material seems alot stronger (I was stress testing them before installation)

when compared to the mesitershatz, and after about 500 miles they look just like the day I installed them. Hell I even put a set on my bay window bus that needed new boots.
I was told by Scott at german supply that they have problems if run for extended periods below feezing temperatures,but being as I live in Arizona, and it isn't driven when below freezing that wasn't a problem for me.
I have always put on german boots but when the last set didn't hold up it was time for a change. I am capable of replacing boots, but have no desire to replace them every year.

Tim: Thanks for adding your experience. Scott told me to contact you for your opinion. I have been out of town and busy. So, although I ment to follow up, I did not. I pull, build and install axle units with my eyes closed. I too also would prefer to build axles that have boots that hold up. I am currently building a pair of axles that I want to be better than new and ready anytime I need them. Then if i ever lose an axle in the future, I will take off axles and do a fast swap and then build another replacement. I have a fair sized supply of good used German Thing boots, inner washers and CV bolts. I never reuse the end snap rings and often replace the other parts. K-mann

The one weekness I can see with the rockford boot kits is a lack of new hardware like the good german kits have. I had a set of new german boots with the hardware on the shelf and just used the snap rings from those kits. I figured if the thing isn't down for a day to replace the boots again next year then the extra expense was worth it. (Maybe german supply can have a talk with his suppliers about that?) Even with the extra hardware expense I am happy with the rockfords, and they are still cheaper than using Porsche 930 cv boots, which was what I was leaning towards before giving these boots a try. Here's a picture of the new boot.

I guess the rust should have been removed

and the axle painted but at 10% Az. humidity and being garaged it will probably take 50 years for that to be a problem.....and I use this Thing as an offroad vehicle so the paint isn't a priority with me.

Thanks for the cv boot picture. The lack of hardware is a bummer although I like the end clamps. I would need to order the hardware and then pay additional shipping. It is a real pain for a few parts. When I redo axles I like to wire wheel the alxes bare and coat with POR-15. Bunches of my hardcore offroad pals cover the axles with rubber hose and hose clamps. I recently built a pair for a guy and he covered the axles with 4" black I just found a urethane axle cover kit that is $13 that I am considering buying. If anyone sells a hardware kit that includes 2 snap rings, 2 thrust washers 6 8 mm allen or 12 pt or T-35 CV bolts and washers I would love to buy a few. Then the rockford boots would be great.

I slid a piece of heatshrink on my axles before I installed all the other parts. The heatshrink goes inside the CV boot.

K-MANN, at one time you may have stated that you have a sourse for true thing/944 cv's. If so, I need some, I just found out my car has type 2 and they click when rear torsion is turned. I was going to go with 930 stuff but I think I will try the real "THING" stuff first. Thanks, Rick

the special cv screws are available for 1.00 each, they are febi/bilstein germany. the rest of the hardware is included in the rockford kit.
