914-- CF chassis stiffening?

For road racing, autocrossing, or just taking that curve in style. Oh yea, and stopping!

914-- CF chassis stiffening?

Post by Piledriver »

I couldn't make up my mind where to ask, so I may cross post...

Everyone has heard of/seen the "factory" 914 GT stiffening kit sold by varois sources, which consists of a few perforated 18-20 Ga metal plates that get welded on in critical areas.

EvilEd built Turbo 914 had those and further chassis stiffening via 11Ga plates that ran fron the front fenders to the rear, PLUS the GT kit.

My 914 LE has NO chassis rust that I can find, but still seems a bit "flexi", and I plan on adding power in the future.

Would bonding a decent layer of CF onto the consoles, front to rear, top and bottom be a practical way of making both bomb proof undercoating ;-) AND very good + LIGHT chassis stiffening?
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

That's a good idea. I don't know much about the 914's but I do know that the man to talk to about carbon fiber for VWs is Joe. www.carbonjoe.net

There's been a lot of discussion of this at www.914club.com, and the surprising conclusion was that the traditional outer long stiffening kits largely didn't accomplish what's needed. The solution, which got good reports, is actually an INNER stiffening kit that's put into the inside of the tub around the lower part of the cabin. It evidently ties everything together more effectively than the traditional outer kits. Engman makes a kit (look in the vendors' section). Do a search and if you can't find it let me know and I'll find it.

Thanks, Paul.
That's basically what Bleyseng put my onto on the "other" thread, and it has links to all the nice photos. Definately looks like the way to go.

There was another thread that had a step-by-step install photo set but I lost it.
