Hi all, just a few minites old and plenty of questions. I have a chance to purchase some good running gear(transaxel and engine) from a 77 vagabon. Is the engine a good swap for a baja, will it fit my 64 vw swing axel, should I purchase the unit and try to figure out how to put it under my bug??? It's the flat, porshe looking f/inj. engine, 2000cc, I think. Are there still parts avil. for this fuel system or should I look for a carb. conversion?? I have never seen one in a bug, but then I haven't seen everything. It must be a fairly powerful engine to push that heavy looking camper around. Do all the campers have the same t/axel, meaning gear ratio and flexability? I've been playing with vw bugs since the 60's but these always had the back door shut and I didn't look inside. A friend recently wrecked this vehicle and I may buy the engine if I can use it. It's only got a few thousand miles on a pro rebuild. Any info. would be helpful.
Thanks, charlie brown

Yes, you can use those in your Bug. No, they will not drop right in. The trans requires special mounts to be welded in and may require you to cut out the rear seat area for clearance. There are cheapie kits and there are 10 degree mount kits that keep the shift linkage in the tunnel. Either way, welding and a fair amount of fabrication and fitting will be required. The clutch bowden tube must be moved because it exits the tunnel right where the nose cone of the trans will fit. The shift rod will require lengthening to fit and the engine is heavier than the stock bug motor but puts out good power. I have a 77 bus also and am contemplating the same install with a bug motor, so I've researched it pretty thoroughly, bought the parts, but haven't done it yet.
