type4 engine builders
Thanks for chiming in Dave. I think you clarified the issue a bit when you stated that the engines must be built with certain criteria in mind. and thanks Don for also mentioning that ops of a certain color have shall we say have the availibility of "deeper pockets" that do not have to comply to the quid pro quo. Thank goodness for that.

The conversation about government strikes close to home with me. I was in a different profession in the private sector making money directly from my customers and never drawing a salary for 21 years. Then, I went back to college and finished my education--at least, as finished as I'm ever going to be at my age. Now, I'm an economist at a government agency. The difference is striking.
I certainly got more hits than I was expecting. When I was researching in earnest, I got leads to several possibilities. (I want to say eight, but I'd have to dredge up the file when I get home.) All of the leads came from VW clubs.
Because the clubs were somewhat close to me, so were the leads. If I remember correctly, two were from the New England area. Again, I would have to look up the names but it would seem to me that if someone goes by a well-known monicker such as "Boston Bob," I would have remembered that. (My wife and daughter are "Survivor" fans, and three of us were rooting against the Boston Rob and Amber combo a series or two back. Anyway, that's why I'm sure I would have remembered such a name.)
The leads--most were in Pennsylvania--were not really leads. Most who did custom work, did so with Type 1s. Two or three would rebuild Type 4s but wanted to stay stock or close to it, or their answers seemed like they didn't want to say no, but hoped I wouldn't ask again.
In all fairness, my own lack of technical knowledge may have been the reason for being put-off. I remember twice (one of the Penn. choices and one in Seabrook, Md.) being told a Type 4 won't fit into the back of a bug. When I said this wasn't true, I didn't have the details memorized. I did say to go to Jake's and Tuna's sites for details, but that didn't go over well.
It has been a while since I was to FAT Performance's Web site. But as I remember it, it seemed awfully 914-oriented and/or wedded to the 911 shroud. I don't post here all that often, but I do lurk several times per week. I am sold on wanting the DTM cooling system. But in all fairness, I should go back to FAT Performance's site and make sure I'm not off-base on that one.
The unassembled engine is a possibility. My VW shop ... well, the one I've been going to since 1988 ... would be open to doing an assembly of an engine even though they shy away from custom work. In fact, they consult the Seabrook shop when it's something well beyond stock. Ironically enough, they haven't been too keen about installing the assembled engine in my Super. I suppose my shop could assemble it, and one shop near Reading, Penn., could install it.
I thought the unassembled engines didn't receive cryogenics. And I thought cryogenics aided in longevity. Again, I'm working off of my memory and not my notes. Since my bug is a co-daily driver, longevity is a priority.
I'm not in a hurry. The original and very stock engine is still going strongly as it approaches 100k miles. I was bored at work <ahem> (while waiting for data to produce data), and wanted to some searching. I came across this old thread in the process. Thanks to all for the responses.
