What would you do?

Post by Joe Del »

If I install a T4 engine in my '70 Beetle, I want it to be at least a 2.0 Liter for performance, reliability. I currently have a complete 1.7 Liter including (stock) carbs, intake manifolds, exhaust system, heater boxes, alternator etc. The only missing parts are the distributor and coil.

Should I convert the 1.7 to a 2.0 or start from scratch with a 2.0 longblock? I'm looking for at least 100 reliable HP. This brings me to the cylinder head issue. Other than valve size, machining the 1.7 head for the 94mm bore, is there any advantage of using a 1.8 or 2.0 head. I plan on a valve job (larger valves), port and polish wether I use the 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0 heads.

I know the 914 heads are the way to go, but they may be a little too high for my budget.

Since the engine setup you're describing is a slightly modified engine, should I use the dual 34mm single throat Solex carbs or upgrade to dual 40mm Webers?

Joe, I am assembling a similar engine and I think the 40mm carbs are about the minimum fot this configuration. I'm starting with stock 40mm dells.

Hi jake raby. sorry that was for the other guy. as far as i can determine the delorto carbs are about 4mm bigger than the webber carbs. A 40mm del is equal to a 44 weber. A tall manifold gives better low end and a short better top end. The best stock head other than the 914 is the 1800 with dual carbs. The stock 2000 has very small exhaust valves to help emissions.
