Air cleaner questions

Post by HalHaygood »

I got a sweet deal on a complete air cleaner.

Since my Thing has an aftermarket chrome jobbie, I don't have any reference for how this goes together, so I have some questions. I have the air cleaner unit, the mounting strap, the rigid connector that goes to the carb, the large hose that connects to the oil filler, and what appears to be a vacuum line to the vacuum pot near the intake. My questions:

1. How much oil, and what kind, goes in this bad boy? Fill to the red line?
2. On the outflow tube on the air cleaner unit, there appear to be two vacuum fittings. I assume that one of these goes to the vacuum pot on the intake. Where does the other one connect to?
3. There is a larger (1/2") port on the side of the top of the air cleaner unit. What does this connect to?
4. Are there any other parts that I'm missing?

Thanks!

Yes fill the bottom of the oil bath air cleaner to the red line. The small 13 mm/1/2" line is an oil breather line that connects to the oil fill tube. Your are correct about the first vaccum line. the second connects to the erg valve (if your thing still has one) This was originally part of the exhaust gas filter which many Things no longer have. You can plug the opening with a rubber cap if you do not have this part any more. You will be very pleased with your stock set up once you have it online. It is so far superior to the aftermarket stuff. K-mann

the right nipple on the thermostat control of the air filter assembly goes to the preheat flap control. here is a photo:

Scott, I am so glad you chimmed in! My first instinct was to refer to Michelle's Thing for a snapshot of a perfect stock set up. I knew you had one of the most perfect stock assemblies. I tried to remember how my now offroad Thing was plugged it. It had a perfect stock set up when I got it. I now remember the dual fittings for the preheat flap control. I looked at parts diagrams and it does not do a good job of showing that connection. Good job.. i got confused on where the erg hooks up. Thanks for keeping things accurate. Wow, thanks for the detailed help. I was actually wondering what that plugged nipple on the manifold was!

There's one more 1/2" connection on the air cleaner unit, which I now see is on the front (front is front) of the unit, hidden in that photo. I've got a plugged 1/2" connection on the fan shroud very near to this -- I assume these two things get connected?

Thanks again!

Also, I see your setup has a 2" paper hose down to the lower tinware. Does it connect to anything underneath, or simply terminate at the tinware to get warm air? I have the hole in the tinware, but it's wide open with nothing underneath.

The 2" paper tube going through the tin ware attaches to an "L" shaped pipe that bolts to the exhaust. This is a stock VW/Thing part. It is a warm air pipe. Yes the 1/2" connection on the front of the unit connects to the fitting on the fan shroud. The vote on that connection is still out. It was a minor air pollution prevention devise. The bad new is that over time you end up with petroleum residue on the entire interior of your fan shroud as a result of this devise. I have mine plugged. K-mann

Okay, cool. It's this part here, right?

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp ... %2D519%2DG

That looks identical to the one listed at Thing $hop for about $45.

I'd like to return the whole intake to stock, so I'll put this all together eventually. But for now, I assume it's okay to just leave the 2" paper hose off entirely until I get the elbow?

Yes that is the part. $15 is a good price. I got one from Mike Basso for about that or less. This is a bug part and not Thing specific. Plug the hole in the tinware to prevent massive dirt invasion. I am also replacing certain missing parts to my 73 with stock carburation. Even after I build the new motor and have a single Dell 36 I wil still adapt the carburator to use the stock oil bath air cleaner system. CB Perfromance sells a sand system air box that bolts to the top of a Dell carb that has an outlet that is the same size as the stock carb to filter tube. http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=563

I am a real die hard fan of the stock air filter system. It has so many awesome design elements like air heaters and more. Let me knwo if I can help in any way. K-mann

hal,

there are two hoses in that area, they are 12mm, the one on the shroud goes to the pressure side of the fuel tank evap system, the one on the air filter to the vacuum side. these two hoses connect to the charcoal canister under the floor in fron of the firewall.

get the preheat air working, it will help the engine run better when it is cold.

Getting the air preheat working right can also net you an additonal 1-3 MPG. It is well worth the effort.
