Front struts

I had a front strut fail internally this weekend so I am toying with the idea of trying Ray's suspension mods. My 411 is still servicable except for some wheel bounce when I hit a bump with the right front tire, so I would rather not take it out of service while I scratch my head over the modifications. Does anyone have a spare set of strut tubes that will fit a '72 411? I am in Oregon so the closer the better for shipping. I will try to write up my experiences doing these upgrades.

For Ray, are all strut tubes the same? If not will any one work better than another?

Yes they are all the same. But....perhaps you might like to try the "stub" method. It involves no cutting and welding. It uese a stub machined. Then you can simply dissassemle and re-assemble with audi 4000 struts and a few speacers. It has some install issues...simple but critical. If you are interested let me know. Ray

Just out of interest: what is the equivalent Euro model of the Audi 4000?
(audi 4000 is not a model-name used in europe, but I'am sure there is a different name for that same car over here, like Audi 200)
Or: what years were these made (picture would be better)?

Does www.Classicgarage.com still have NOS strut cart. available on there site? I think that is there web address but I think they are in the sticky post also. I think the Ray mod is probably the best way to go for the long haul! You then have a setup that is not only better valving but gives you a replacement cart. option in the future! Bill

this is for wally ,, for you the audi 4000 is audi 80 or 90 from the year 85to90 ,, the model 90 is only more luxury car (électric option ) for the mécanic it is the same (4or5 cylinders ) but i thing ray geeve the information for the 4 cylinder model the strut is more smaller i thing ,just good for the 412 , the weight on the front is différent for the 5 cylinder and maybe the strut is différent too ??? ray can geeve more exact information for that ,,,albert

The VW Quantum, which those on the other side of the Atlantic know as the B1 Passat (I believe) was essentially a VW version of the Audi 4000 here, if memory serves me right (though it's been know to fail me). In fact the 86.5-88 Quantums (my brother and I are fans of those year Quantums, the unloved of the watercooled crowd, and have somethings in common with the 411/412) are basically a 4000 with a 5000 engine(5cyl, 2.5L).

Thanks Albert! The Audi 80 is/was very common here

Tuna: The Passat and Audi 80 (or 4000) of the same era's have one very different constructional difference afaik: the engine in the VW is transversely mounted whereas the engine in the Audi is mounted parallel to the length-axis of the car (sorry, don't know the english word for that).
How that would affect the shock, I dunno but the cars share things, but are also quite differently.

In the Audi 4000 and Quantum...the enegines are longitudinal and the chassis are the same. The Audi 80 would have indeed been the next iteration of the 4000 but has a very different chassis than the early 4000 and quantum.
Its peculiar. In Europe the 5000 originally started as the 100 I believe. Then....at the very last yeas of the 5000 over here....it became the 100. Ray
