its not...

if you are grinding gears with full clutch then theres a prob,,,, if you cant push in at about 10 miles an hour then theres a problem.... even with the old beetle gear ratios you can push in at least 10 mph///

i do it on the freeway al the time whe traffic gets tied up and im stuck in it...
sometimes, you have to clutch down and push (not really hard) until it "lets you" transition it into gear...

What year is your car?

Older beetles did NOT have a synchro first gear, you would have to be almost stopped to downshift to first. This is normal, on OLDER bugs, like 57 down or so. I can't remember what year they got synchronized first gear.

I can shove it in 1st at 20mph but I dont for obivous reasons.
The tranny/engine isn't designed to slow you down, the brakes are.
Just have it in the right gear so you're in the power band 8)

well,, again 3rd to down to about 20 to the traffic light,, is good for fanning the engine and mechanical braking to some extent,, but i do agree that it should not be the first thought in braking..

brakes are cheaper on the visit to the mechanic lol not a tranny....

Ive got a question though if someone can quickly answer,,,,

69 ghia with a ticking noise....... i press the clutch even a 1/4 way in and the clicking changes pitch(noise pitch) or the noise stops all together,.... then later,, when hot goes away hmm not the engine...

what the heck is going on in there..... the mice fell off the wheel in the gear box?

Sometimes I have to shift from first right at 15-20 mph.. it's really shoves you back in the seat at that speed in third

we talking about braking oer acellerating... ?

most people drive over the speed of 20...

dropping into 3rd when slowing down under 50 mph should be an easy transition and ride down to about 20 without shiftng down again,...

this is to SLIGHTLY add mechanical braking power... and fan the engine mor importantly... not that it is absolutely neccesary,, but it helps... especially when the engine is hot for whatever reason...

brakes.. well a 1700 lbs car + or - cant be that much wear on 4 drums ,, or 2 drums 2 discs... unless we are coasting 45 to about 20 feet to the intersection treshold markings

er.. I meant having to shift into third directly from 1st..
its quite slow down there(for a stock bug) and starts going good around 25-30mph.
