confirm xmsn bad`
My 69 bug. When I let out the clutch in any gear I can hear a grinding noise, like gears rubbing. Just wanted to confirm that its the tranny, and not something like a clutch throw out bearing or such. Is it one gear that is shot, or ? It did pop out of gear a couple times recently, but nothing other than that. I've done most of the work keeping the car running, except for engine rebuilds, xmsn, major stuff. Thanks much. First time on this forum.

So you can't coax any motion out of the car in any gear? About the only things that could affect all gears at once would be a broken differential or an input shaft that's come loose (coincidentally, those happen to be about the only things you can fix without quite a few special tools). But odds are it's something else; even if the trans has a history of jumping out of gear that's not likely to be related to a total failure like this.
First thing to check for is a stripped brake drum. Pop off the hubcaps, chock the wheels/set the handbrake and let the clutch out in gear with the engine idling. If you see either axle nut turning, you've found the problem. Since it's an IRS car, if neither axle nut is turning look underneath to see if there's any motion at the driveshafts - you could have a broken CV joint instead.
If there's no motion coming out of the trans, it's either bad or the clutch disk is broken - you'll need to pull the engine to check the clutch, if it's OK you need a trans (or if you're lucky one of those simpler repairs I mentioned). If the clutch is bad, fix it and check the transmission mounts (worn/loose ones can cause even a good trans to pop out of gear).

Tranny fixed! <G>
Much thanks for the diagnosis! Unfortunately, my net was down and I was unable to read till later. It was right on the money. I was fortunate in finding a shop that would help me solve my problem without just saying it could be many things. When he asked if it makes a noise with the clutch in; also that grinding in any gear, he told me it was the brake drum. Waa Laa. He also strongly suggested that I replace the axle nut as said if didn't it would happen again shortly. Well, ok. Did that too. I did notice that the inside of the nut was only half the thickness of the new one, so it was for sure wearing (but did not look warped/crooked). He also told me to check the other rear, which I did. The axle nut was loose. I could get a very slight movement if I grabbed the wheel. I will have to take it off also and check the drum this wknd. Hopefully its not too bad as no bread for another at this point.
I've had kind of this problem before with the rears where I notice that the axle nut is loose, like the bearings are being forced in and/or wearing out. Changing the bearings is an ugly job for me; done it once. Thanks again for your detailed reply and for this site!
And in answer to Arlo's question , it didn't move at all in any gear and it did happen suddenly, although I knew something was going on cause of new noises when driving.
On the road again, but now that I've found this site more questions to come
