Hey guys,
Got a doosey of a question for ya. Just finished taking out, as well as, taking apart my tranny. It is a '74 thing tranny, AV 15 11 3 Is the model number I believe. IRS type, if I'm not mistaken. And now, on with the story...
The reason for taking the tranny out is that the tranny was stuck in a gear. I don't know which gear it was, but I CAN tell you that the slider was the farthest one from Reverse slider. The slider was pushed in. Now here is the part that mystifies me. The shift lever that moves the sliders had somehow managed to put that slider into place and then slip out off place and back into the other two sliders that were still in nuetral. As far as my friend and I can tell, the shifting lever remains unbent, and the adjustable points on the interior of the sliders are not loose. The ONLY thing we could find that seems bad is that there is one bearing that needs replacing, but even it doesn't bind. It just turns roughly. The gears are not excessively worn, and everything meshes and turns smoothly. Even reverse is still intact, though more worn that the other gears.
So fellas, hit me with your ideas. What could make the lever slip out of the slider and back into the other two? What in the great name of Muir could possibly be wrong with this tranny that am I missing?
I'll be back with updates as they develop. And I hope they do.
Ciao,
Jake
P.S. Here is a diagram of the tranny. Part 40 is the bearing that is very rough and I am going to replace.http://www.longenterprises.com/diagram_ ... ission.htm
P.S.S. The entire version of this post is on The Samba Thing Forum.
Engine out and tranny in pieces.

I bet the 3/4 shift rail bore is severely worn. This is very common in VW transmissions and especially late models like yours.See Marcs reply under "nose cone replacement"What you're calling a slider is the shift rail.it sounds like it was in 3rd gear but the shift lever(hockey stick)could still find 1/2 and reverse.

That was indeed the case.it sounds like it was in 3rd gear but the shift lever(hockey stick)could still find 1/2 and reverse
Seeing as this is a common problem in VW trannys, is there a "common" way to fix it? Please?I bet the 3/4 shift rail bore is severely worn. This is very common in VW transmissions and especially late models like yours
I also read Marc's reply and we (my friend and I) were a bit suspicious of the "hockey stick". Do you know where one could purchase that piece? Would a regular VW parts place be able to get it, or would it have to be more specialized VW tranny shop; in your experience?
