Anyone have a thermostat PLEASE???

Post by MGVWfan »

Man, I've been BO'd for months and cancelled outright on ACVW thermostats ordered from 4 different places now. Anyone have a non-leaky stat they'd be willing to part with for my 412? I've got everything else, just not the stat. And I've given up on the solenoid idea, the forces required are just too big for any reasonably sized solenoid to deal with. :?

Well I don't know if it is of any use to you, but I have a couple of those around but I think they all need a new piece of wire attached to them, but the bellows itself should be okay. around here most people cut the wires on them and run without them.I will see if I can come across any that haven't been cut.

hi, mg, for your thermostat he have many solution,, on the maket you can find type 1 or type2 thermostat for appx.35$ with small modification on the therm.wire take the most hight therm. if you want to go with électric therm. and sélénoild . use the starter sélénoild ( you can use any ,,vw,, sélénoild . with hook, but you put 1of the 2 small therminal on the starter on the ground ,,, inside the sélénoild you have 2 windding ,, 1 for to start ,and 1 for to keed ,,on,, and that make a very strong thing ,alb.

Hey Hoodsy, I've PM'ed you, thanks.

Albert, bon jour! I've considered a starter solenoid, but they pull way too much current (15-20A for the holding coil, 30-50A for the pull-in coil) and aren't designed to be energized for more than a minute or so continuously due to heating effects. But, the pull of a starter solenoid pull-in coil is what I need for this application, true enough. Thanks for the reply.

hi, mg, do you thing , at the vaccumm cruze controle for the modern car today with this équipment ,, you have a big diaframg on the gaz wire who geeve action by vaccuum on this cable ,, put only small électric air sélénoild , you can find all that on the audi 5000 and you connect that on small électric thermostat and wend the thermostat geeve the power on the sélénoild , the vaccumm from the motor head make suction on the diaframg and keep the mécanic door flap open,,, that is only one suggestion ,,,albert

Albert, that cruise control vacuum module is a great idea! What about one of those heater control door vacuum controls that open and close vent doors? Also, what about just using manual choke control cable? bill

hi,bil, yes , the heather controle box is good idée too, but it is make with plastic , and at my oppignion ,it is not very strong for to work on the 412 cooling door damper , and on the audi cruise controle, the vaccuumm dyafrram is strong with long road for action , d,t use the vaccumm audi motor for cruse controle , use only the 412 head vaccumm , more simple,,, the choke cable is very good ,but you never know wend the motor is at the good temp but more simple ,alb.

My boss and I were talking about this today...we had exactly the same idea, a modern cruise control servo, the kind with just the vacuum can and solenoid valves, no speedometer cable connection. It could work.

Another thought...a Corvair thermostat?

Bus Depot is now out of any variety of ACVW thermostats, unfortunately. I checked them last week.

CIP is out of stock also (tried them a month ago), haven't tried Pelican Parts, but that price, yeow!

The problem is that Wahler has stopped making new thermostats, and the NOS is drying up fast.

If that 'Vair stat works for T4s, it opens up a different line of supply that's still in production...and 'Vair fans appear to want to keep the thermostat in there, which makes for a market for new 'stats into the future.
