I was just looking over my site (contemplating an update....) and I noticed that the M560 option was a "steel sliding sunroof and wind deflector". I took this directly from a dealer manual I found eons ago.

Oh, installing a sunroof is probably just a dream for now. Tuna, if you look, albert did mention the M code for the sunroof in a previous post. I wonder how the headlight washers were mounted? I also would like to get my claws on some white front turn signal lenses from Italy...as well as some popout windows. I'm thinking the sports steering was just the sport steering while like what was available on Beetles at the same time. I wonder if the sport disc wheels were the same design as the Beetle sport steel wheels? I've seen many pictures of Type 4s in Europe with them in what looks like 5.5" width.

I have never heard of the "sports steering" version around here, yet seen one. But it is/was commonly used to mount 5,5 X 15 ET25 or 35 steel wheels on these cars. My own 412S Variant is hanging on such 4. - But that is not the same as that they did not offer it around here.
Personally I think that the 411/412 is vastly underdeveloped. It should never have been on the streets with 4,5 X 15 wheels. Because the handling gets so much better just by adding 5,5 inchers, even along with simple 165 tyres. Also the Variant doesnt come with rear sway bar. Another bummer. I added one to my otherwise (at the time) stock 412S, and the handling and wind stability was so much better.
I did a bunch of small improovements on the ones I had and the one that I have, and it makes a huuge difference-. But that´s another story.

Farmer is dead on. The difference in handling just by going to a larger tread contact patch on teh 411/412...is HUGE. I have 5.5's on mine. The move from 185/75-15's on 4.5" rims (which is pretty much what you found on most of them here)....to 205/60-15's on 5.5" rims is like night and day.
Yes...adding the rear sway bar to a variant is HUGE. The holes are all there from teh factory. Just bolt one on.
Adding urethane or solid outer links makes a large factor of difference. Just adding the later assymetrical strut bushing is a noticable difference.
This car IS vastly underdeveloped. Ray
