Show your winter projects!!

Hello fellow curve huggers!

Well its that time of year again when we huddle in our garages and wrench like mad on our old German steel. I'm restoring a 74 standard beetle for Autocross & eventually if my skills improve SCCA and vintage rallys.

My winter project is to restore the chassis. Over the holidays I dissassembled, cleaned and prepped the chassis. I welded in new pans from WolfsburgWest and painted the entire thing with Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator. I then seam sealed the chassis. My next steps are to paint a second coat of Rust encapsulator then paint the chassis with Eastwoods Chassis black topcoat.

As for the suspension I have most of my road hugging upgrades on the work bench awaiting installation:

1. SwayAway adjustable spring plates
2. Koni Adjustables Front and Rear (RED Specials)
3. Whiteline 20mm adjustable front swaybar
4. Whiteline 20mm non-adjustable rear swaybar
5. New TRW steering box
6. Prothane Urethane Bushings in front beam and IRS arms.

Glad to see another bug owner out there for the autocross! I have my 73 super just about done for the first race on feb5th. (knights stadium, Fort Mill ) check out ccrscca.com for our local regions website. Also check the scca rule book for which class you'll be in before you do a ton of mods. You may get moved into a class where limited HP will be your downfall. I'm in "H" stock, or HS. No swaybar changes allowed. No adjusters allowed either. I'm not sure about the next step up, FSP (street prepared) for the beetle, but it's competitive in HS. I had a blast in my stock swing axle 1200. Do some heavy reading about what you can and can't do. Hope it comes out well for you, hope to see you there.
