Wireing to tow a 73 Thing behind RV

Post by tooter »

Gang,

We're making a trip this summer from TN to NY, NH, WI, MT back to TN. Going off to visit some long lost family and friends. We're taking a 2002 Rialta (a VW based 22' RV) to save some $$ on lodging and I would like to tow my 73' Thing for an easier commute from the camp ground to sight seeing and visiting.

I have heard of folks doing this with a Thing, but I'm not sure about a way of wiring the Thing like a trailer would be. How/ where is the best place to run the wires from? In dash lines by the fuse box with battery disconnected or at the wires for the rear lights in the engine compartment and also dissconnect the battery? Or, just make a complete separate lighting rig similar to a trailer and strap it to the bumper of the Thing? I have a towbar designed for my 73 Bug, will this towbar also work with a Thing?

thanks!

Most large parts stores, as well and places like Wal-mart sell light kits. They attach to the vehicle being towed with magnets and then hook to a standard trailer light plug.

The bug and Thing use the same tow bar. Mattt wired his Thing for towing like you. Perhaps he will read this post and list his procedure. K-mann

U-Haul sells an excellent light system that is already wired and uses magmets to put the lights on the tow car. It will run you about $29 - $35 Cheaper than you can buy all the pieces.
