Passenger side mirror

Post by wildthings »

I would like to install a stock mirror on the passenger door of my 4dr. I know that on doors that came with a mirror from the factory there is a metal plate inside the door that is drilled and tapped to accept the mirror. Is this plate hidden under the sheet metal of all T4's or just the ones that came originally with mirrors?

Has any one used the inserts sold by various VW mail order parts houses to install a stock mirror. Don't want to try something that might end up leaving me with just an ugly hole instead of a usable mirror.

If there was not one installed (a mirror)...chances are that the insert is not n there. Generally, they have a screwed in factory plug where the mirror would have gone. On those, its as simple as removing the plug and screwing in the mirror. Ray

Yeah, the type 3 was the same way. I was working on a ghia over the winter for a friend, and I looked at how they did the mirror install on them. It's pretty slick, they used an external mount (held on with 2 screws) that got a nice stainless steel cover to hide it (the threaded piece). I've been looking at adding a second mirror to my Notch, but didn't want something that left me with an unuseable hole either, so this solution might work out for that. My other option was to cut a section out of the door, and weld in a mount from a rusty door (original plan anyway). But the ghia mount would work better, and I wouldn't have to repaint the area as it's got 4 year old paint on it now. I really didn't care for the cheesy add a mirror mount sold by all the parts places, as it doesn't have anything to keep it in place if you decide to remove the mirror for replacement (the piece falls to the bottom of the door). That and I think I'd have to remove my wing window just to get it mounted. I hope this helps.
