REDUCTION BOXES.

Post by SCULLY181 »

YEAH, IT'S AN EX GERMAN ARMY 181 SO IT IS EQUIPED WITH REDUCTION BOXES LIKE THE SPLITTY FOR BETTER USE OFF ROAD LSD IN THE BOX AND STUFF, BUT THAT MEANS IT HAS A USELESS TOP SPEED AND IF YOU LOWER THEM TOO MUCH THE OIL DOESN'T FEED THE REDUCTION BOXES PROPERLY AND THEY DIE!!! ANY HELP.

I only know about three or four people who have the swing rear with reduction boxes on their Thing. I am not ignoring your request, you have asked a question that I have no information to offer. I wonder if folks on the splitty bus forum could be of some help. I would also post this question on the transaxle forum. That list is filled with a good group or truly VW trans experts. K-mann

Hello,

The swap is straight-forward this axles are shorter than the bus ones.
You need a pair of 1968+/splines (long/long) beetle axles you have also to swap your ring from the other side or you will have 4 reverse gears!
You can retain you stock drums with machine them a bit where the 36mm nut goes. Also need beetle spring plates.Or you can get a complete assembly from a beetle to avoid some of the hassle.

Good luck,
Jim
