Has anyone ever tried this???

Post by LEJ »

Hello, new to your forum. I own a 1973 Thing and I've had a lot of experiences both mechanical and otherwise with VW's and Porsche's (40+ years worth) I purchased the car last month 5-17-06 and since taking ownership, I've installed disc brakes on the front, chrome Mangles 5.5 x 15 wheels, a 2110 cc engine, new shifter, oil and temp gauges, electric fuel pump and a few other things.

I enjoy these kinds of boards and like passing along information as well as receiving new information and idea's

I'm retired and coupled with being the Administrator on www.spyderclub.com, I've also been doing a great deal of tune up work, modifications and general repairs on replica Spyders and Speedsters.

I've never heard of anyone doing the below and wanted to see if it's been done. I also posted this on the Samba Thing page so I've quoted myself:
I have one of those combination oil pump/filter arrangements on my engine. (I know, they're not as good as a full flow cut case)

Perma cool and several other companies make an adapter that screws on the area where the filter would normally go. This adapter has an inlet and outlet threaded with 1/2" pipe female bungs.

My question is this, has anyone ever used one of these devices in this application to add an external oil cooler and a remote filter???

Due to ground clearance and wanting to run a cooler, I have such a device on my sandrails Subaru engine but I'm not sure if it's been tried on a VW engine with this kind of a an oil pump/filter combination
thanks in advance, Larry

Larry, First off, welcome to STF. I am pleased you posted here. For those of you who have not had the pleasure. Larry is a sage VW/Porsche guy who has lots of experience and knowledge to offer and is great at sharing with others.

You bring up a few issues that are near and dear to our hearts. First is the Subaru conversion. A bunch of us are Thing owners and drive Subaru also. Many of us dream of running a thing with a Subaru motor.

Your idea about the bolt on non full flow method of filtering and cooling oil is an issue near and dear to us all. My 1915 is full flow and about to get a set of Canadian oil coolers with thermostats bypass valves and pressure lines. I have a T-4 cooler and modified shroud and still do not have enough cooling for my set up. We ran the set up you mentioned on Bajas putting the oil cooler below the back window. We got many 1835s to live a bit longer with this set up.. Nice to see you on this forum. I hope you visit often and share your knowledge here. We strive to be a bit more problem solving tech site and less chit chat here.

I purchased the oil filter adapter and the remote oil filter and a large oil cooler. I hooked everything up and mounted the oil cooler above the transaxle.

Via Sambe, I found out that CB makes an oil pump with an exterior [IN] and [OUT] on the cover of the pump, much like a full flow only along with having an OIL OUT, it also has an OIL IN.

CB's pump is $42.00 and I also would need a remote oil filter attachment so the $50.00 I spent was less than the cost of a CB and filter attachment. Oil line and the cooler accounted for another $60.00

I just got done starting the engine and checking for leaks, (none) Hopefully, tomorrow I'll get a chance to drive the car and see if it helps with the oil temp.

"where the filter would normally go"

There is no filter on a type one engine, are you talking about the shroud oil cooler blockoff.

There is a type 4 adapter that screws onto the filter area to move the filter to a remote location. It has an in out. This may work if you have one of those T1 sand rail external pump / cover / filter setups.

Just full flow it. Look here on how to do it on an already assembled engine.

I guess you had to read from the beginning to realize that this engine had one of those dual purpose oil pumps.
